scgt with router?

by Joey Mille » Fri, 02 Mar 2001 05:30:37

guys,

I was wondering if someone could help me figure out how to race
scgt thru
an ip#. My racing computer is in the garage and i run the cat 5 line
from inside my house computer. i only have one ip address and the router
keeps me from purchasing another number. I can play any game thru a
website like mplayer and vroc, and won, but cant hook up with someone in
scgt thru the game. Is this a port opening issue or is the only way to
host or join IP address races involve getting the second ip# for my
machine in the garage? i dont believe that my computer is behind a
firewall because i have no other problems with my games. Links 2000
doesnt connect to the ZONE, but thats no big deal. It's just golf...lol.
i think both my hub and router are netgear and the cable modem is from
Cox. Any ideas or pointing in a specific direction would be appreciated.
I can host a race thru vroc but i dont think I can host outside of vroc
because of the masked ip3 my machine uses. Just guessing, as i'm not
very computer proficient. Thanks again in advance.

Yes, if you are using a Netgear router, then you are most likely behind a
firewall. I looked at their router/switch combo and decided after reading
N4's info about port forwarding (I know you're talking about SCGT) I decided
to go with just a switch (instead of a hub because hub=shared bandwidth,
switch=dedicated bandwidth)

Netgear says something about HTML access to the firewall setup, N4 talks
about port forwarding, and this and that and I said phooey, I'm not going to
do it. I BTW could have gotten my computer to work without getting 2nd IP,
but I got it anyway, point being I have 4 computers up and running on cable
at any given time with no router and only 2 IPs, so go figure. I really on
use 2 of the computers most of the time, but it is neat to be able to d'load
updates and software for the others when needed. Secret is to setup another
computer with just a HUB or SWITCH is to turn everything off (modem
included) Plug modem back in first, after modem resets, turn on HUB and new
computer you are adding, then after it starts and you can access Inet, turn
on computers that were already hooked up and working and voila, access for
everyone.

Just some advice, worth exactly what you paid for it, but I believe that
your router has a firewall built in to it. Check out the doc's on it,
apparently it is based in HTML and "easy" to work with...lol.

best of luck,
