Momo and noise

Hi all

I just bought the Logitech Momo wheel and was wondering if the noise level
from the wheel is correct or if I have a faulty wheel.

The noise from the wheel is very loud when I drive on gravel and the wheel
tries to simulate that feeling. In fact the wheel it self sounds like
driving on gravel. The noise level is quite high, at the same level as 2
people speaking high which means above normal conversation level.

If my little baby is going to sleep in the next room and I want to be able
to hear her wake up I leave the door a little bit open. Then I need to turn
off FF if I want to drive a rally game where there is gravel or other
structures in the road which makes the wheel "rattle" or "vibrate" otherwise
I'm afraid it is going to wake her.

It is worst when I drive with the wheel in the center position. When I pull
it to make a turn, it gets a little bit less high

I don't know if FF wheels are supposed to sound like this. I never owned one
before and never tried one. I bought it online and would not be interested
in sending it back for a new one if they are going to say the wheel os OK
and make me pay all the shipping costs

Please anyone with a Logitech Momo wheel: Is the noise level from this wheel
this high ???

Thanks in advance

Anders

You may have the motor coming loose and grinding on the gears. It happened
to me but after I tightened the screws it was as solid as a rock. There is
something wrong somewhere with your wheel.

Hi, I was quite surprised at the amount of noise the Momo made during it's
calibration routine.....the buttons on the wheel particularly. My kids gave
it a kinda funny look, but then stayed away from it, so that's cool.....Does
your wheel make more noise than that during the games? I can't imagine that
it would......

My LWFF is pretty noisy.  I've shut off the FF in some games at night so I
don't wake the house.

If the game allows I try to turn off all "effects" and just enable the road
feel FF.  Gravel, etc effects are pretty arcadeish anyway, IMO.

Hmm...my LWFF is very quiet but my friend's MOMO is very noisy -
particularly when playing Rally Trophy i.e. turning the wheel quickly.

My MOMO is loud in RT too, even with the overall strenght turned down to
35%.

Steve may have a point about the motor rattling. I'll check that on
Wednesday.

This reminds me of the MSFF simulating a diesel engine in one of its tests
:)  It really sounded like one!

Hi,

Well, based on the feedback from my initial post I called the shop where i
bought the wheel. As a test I started NFS5  and turned the "simulate moter
engine FF" (or something like that) up to 100%. The wheel then makes a lot
of noise and "rattles" like h.... (Ed: The wheel makes a lot more noise than
the start up initialisation noise, Steve: I thought about something like
that could be happening, but the wheel made that noise from day one and
Bart: Yes, the noise is extremly loud trying to simulate the engine
vibrations)

I turned the speakers off and had the game running but the car standing
still, just simulating the motor engine. I then spoke to a person from the
shop and asked if the wheel was suposed to soung like this. They had
absolutly no problems hearing the wheel over the phone and they told me to
turn it off, put it in the box and return it. I guess something is wrong
with the wheel and I'm looking forward receiving a new one within the next
week.

Thanks for the feedback all of you. Now I just have to
waaaaiiiiiiiiiit........ (This is the bad part when byuing items cheaper
online instead of in a shop)

Cheers

Did you get any luck replacing your wheel?  I think mine is the same.
It's fine in N2002 and GPL, but I recently tried Need for Speed:PU
which has FF effects for the engine, and the clatter was pretty bad.
I've noticed that there is maybe 1mm play in the wheel and if you
quickly and gently "vibrate" the the wheel within that play there's a
definate metal-on-metal clacking going on.

The wheel feels fine otherwise, it's just fast, small vibrations that
cause the noise.

Like you, mine was a mail order job...

Hi

Well yes I got the wheel replaced (just arrived today, 3 hours ago)

I connected it and started up NFS: PU because this game was the worst when
it tried "simulate" the engine. Then the wheel really "rattled" very loud
without I even tried to drive. Just standing still and keeping the wheel in
a center position makes the worst of the wheel. You are very precise in your
desciption of the problem and your description is exactly like my wheel.

The new wheel behaves just like the one I replaced and the noise is at the
same level. No difference what so ever.

I still can't believe it is supposed to make so much noise but I guess
that's the way it is. Other than that the wheel is superb.

Thanks for the response - I was a little worried mine was duff but I guess I
can relax now. :-)

Maybe if we had desks made out of marble the sound wouldn't resonate and
we'd be OK...

You're right about that NFS game.  The engine effect is gimmicky, though -
I've never driven a car where the wheel shook because the engine was
running, and I very much doubt Porsches are like that!  At least the wheel
is good in the games that matter...

I -highly- recommend the squashball mod for the brake.  Simple task, did it
on the first day I had my wheel.
