GP2: Advice on tyre wear

by Luc Do » Wed, 23 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Hello to all,

Just wanted to seek advice on tyre wear in GP2.  After a good
while of setup changes, I was able to have the pole in Germany.

Trouble is on the race warm-up, I did a stint of 14-15 laps
and my tyres were done.  How can I reduce tyre wear so that I can look
to do a 2 stop race (around lap 17 and around lap 33 or 34) ?  If I
lower the amount of suspension (from 1200 to 1000 or even 900 maybe)
the car does not corner as I want it to.

        Anyone ? Please !

You can try to slightly soften all of the shocks.  You probably won't
notice a few clicks, but the tires will thank you for it.

Also, changing the dampers (level 2) will affect tire wear. Check the
manual for the effects. If you soften the springs all around, you need to
increase the ride height, because the plank might rub on the ground. If
you change the ride height, your cornering grip will also be affected. My
solution to the problem is, make the springs at a firmer setting, reduce
the ride height and adjust the suspension packers so the plank won't rub.
Then adjust the dampers to reduce tire wear.

This way, at most circuits, the tires will last for 18 to 22+ laps without
appearing "red" when you do an inspect vehicle. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice.  I'll try it.

Are you using a keyboard, joystick or steering wheel. If your using a
steering wheel, it could be that youv'e used too higher lock to lock
setting. On a steering wheel with 270 degrees travel that is.

A while ago I downloaded the zanardi setup. It had 11 degrees movement,
and also steering sensitivity was set way down than what I used to run at.
After experimenting I changed it to 12 degrees. And my lap times improved.
But the biggest difference was tyre wear, followed by cornering speed. I
was also able to ride over curbs that much easier.

After only half a hour practice at a adelaide, I had lowered my time to a
1.13, another half a hour later I did a 1.17 at monaco. That's with using
no help options, and a modified Eric Busch qualifing setup (Changed
gearing ratios up).

I would recommend the zanardi setup to anyone with a steering wheel.

If you do download it, try it out at monaco's first corner, you'll find
you'll be going through in either 2'nd or 3'rd instead of 1'st with no
tyre squeeling.

You probably noticed your lap times during this race warm-up. You will
notice that you wont get close to those times during the race. The same
goes for your tyre wear. Unfortenately there is no other way in GP2 to
check how the tyres wear in a race, than do a test race. Most setups
should last for a 1 stop race at Hockenheim and all setups should last
for a 2 stop. Check my site for some setups if you are a NHA (No Helps
and Aids) driver:

/Christer, soon at a track nearby :o)!
