We hear that five very large firms are interested in sponsorship of CART's
Mexico City race. As we have reported in the past, one is Toyota, the
others are a South American tobacco company who are coming out with a new
brand of cigarettes, a large telecommunications company, Corona, and another
large Mexican firm. We hear Toyota is opening a lot of new dealerships in
Mexico City, so race sponsorship fits in well for them. The most
interesting news is that the promoters are starting to say they may get an
attendance of 400,000 on race day. With Indy having right around 300,000
seats, and the infield crowd not being much these days, it seems almost
certain now that CART's Mexico City race will displace the Indy 500 as the
biggest race in the world. MC
