Yes, Goy, thanks. I got it yesterday and was going to post something but
was too discouraged. I think it should be classified as a "fantasy" track,
since in incorporates NONE of the characteristics of the track that made
Bridgehampton so unique. The main straight, for example, runs *downhill*,
whereas in real life, of course, it runs uphill. The track layout is barely
reminiscent of the real thing, the flow of the turns is all wrong, the
rhythm is as different as a waltz is from disco, and even the environmental
scenery is a stab in the dark (the track is surrounded by scrub brush, not
stately pines). Overall: not even close. (Well, the width is close, and
the track texture is good - I have a lump of the actual Bridgehampton tarmac
sitting on my refrigerator to compare it to.)
I spent nearly two years working with Lou Magyar to get his GPL version of
The Bridge just right...and feel that his track comes as close as any GPL
track to their real-world counterparts. As I've mentioned here before, as
the Editor of Car and Driver, I put in hundreds of laps at both
Bridgehampton and Lime Rock, both testing street cars and driving race cars,
so I feel I know them pretty well. The author of this N2003 "impression" of
Bridgehampton also had a whack at a surreal interpretation of Lime
Rock...and fared no better. It's like he never even saw any pictures of the
venues. Neither attempt looks nor feels anything like the real thing. I
hope he hasn't quit his day job.
