My main wish for GPL is a simple one.  I hope that Papy includes their
own joystick configuration routine, instead of using Microsoft's Win95
routine.  I own a new Dell running OSR2 and I've been unable to
configure my ECCI wheel under games like CPR and Road to Indy.  The only
Win95 racing game that I've been able to get it to work under is SODA
and that's because the included their own routine...

I agree wholeheartedly. One of the nice things about Nascar2 is that
the joystick/wheel reading code works reliably and consistently,
because it doesn't have to depend on the hopelessly flaky Win95
DirectInput code.

If they HAVE to use the Win95 code, please at least put in sufficient
workarounds (i.e., fully adjustable deadzone setting) so that all
devices can at least use the game without jittering/shaking wildly.

I also have a Dell running osr2 and dont have any problems with my CDS2 at
all. It calibrates without a hitch in any win95 game so far. Do you have
direct x 5 installed. I just followed the instructions that came with the
wheel.

It would be nice but I really cant see that happening its a W95 game so
will utilise it no doubt.
My main wish for GPL is that everyone takes more notice of the things that
are implemented in the game and not be so concerned about the things that
are left out.

Have you ever contacted the manufacturer of the ECCI wheel? I don't have one
but it's seems very unlikely to me, that that is impossible with such a
quality/expensive wheel. In can configure my old T1 (one of the very first!)
with CPR and it should be possible with an ECCI wheel ( I think<g>)

Cheers!

Yes, DX5, ProPanel, CTFJ utility deadzone utility, everyuthing else I
can find to make it calibrate the wheel smoothly (i.e., without
jitters). Nothing works. I finally bought an [optical] Microsoft
joystick, so at least that works smoothly because it's
non-calibrating. But that doesn't help my T2 wheel. It's just a
standard Soundblaster16 gameport I'm plugging into. Everything else is
very generic too - Intel P200, Intel mobo, WD IDE hard drives, etc.

BTW, this (the SB 16) is the third different gameport I've had on this
system, and all had the calibration problems - but only under Win95.
DOS programs have always worked fine.

Yes! I agree too!

NASCAR2 and SODA 's own  joystick configuration routine let me swich
between wheel system and flight systems. It is really helpful.
And, I think why they make so good handling is the joystick configuration
routine.

I hope of course GPL too. and Geoff Crammond's GP3 too. :)

CPR is by far the worst joystick/wheel configuration problem I have
encountered with Win95.  Neither device will calibrate without jitters
or a strong bias to one side.  Is the "Sidewinder" the only dependable
device?

The only one I've personally used that fixed the problem (note that
some systems apparently don't have calibration problems at all, so if
someone says joystick X works you have to make sure they're on a
system that gets the calibration jitters). The Sidewinders work with
optical sensors, which seems to provide more accurate and consistent
readings.

The worst part is the actual configuration of joystick axis or buttons
to game functions. Esp. the hardcoding of functions to buttons. I want
to be able to shift gears with the wheel pedals on my TM GP1. The best
configuration is still possible in ICR2/N2, after the patch it works
quite the same in F1RS. This should be standard procedure, give a list
of game functions and let the user press any button, move any axis or
hit any key -> configured!
