Ed,

In NASCAR 2, will the pit roads be 'straightened' at the tracks where
they currently follow the bends in the front straight?

No.  the pit road will still be curved to follow ther contour of the
track.  This would require a MAJOR rewrite of our track design tools.

How about random pit assignments?

There's nothing random about pit assignments.  With the exception of the
defending points champion, pit stalls are assigned based on how you
qualify.

Yes, and from what I understand, you get to pick your pit stall, after
the defending champion, and then the qualifiers ahead of you, have
chosen.  Is this correct?

Are you sure about that?  I thought that assignments we're done based on how
well you qualified but the driver also had the choice of pit stalls.  In other
words, if you qualified first you would have first dibs to choose any spot other
than the 1st one on pit road.

Of course you'd want to grab a spot toward the front but at some tracks it would
be better to catch a spot which has an opening in the pit wall in front of it.
That way no one could block you in.

Pit assignments could be taken 2 ways.  You can be assigned one or you
could assign your own from those not taken.  Still, there is nothing
random about it.  I don't know all the rules and it may be different at
different tracks but it would make sense to me to allow drivers the
choice based on how they qualify.  There are really only 2 or 3 spots
that have an advantage.  Those that have more room around them like at
the ends and next to the garage entrance and victory lane.

Pit assignments are based on A) the previous year's champion, and
B) how you qualify.

By this, they are given a choice on where they want to pit.  Most
tracks people try to pit closer to the front.  However, at Talladega
and Daytona, the people try to pit slightly farther back, therefore
able to attain 55 mph by the end of pit road, for green flag pit stops.
This gives them the added advantage of being at full speed much
quicker than the person at the front who is at 5-10 mph at the same
point.

At Sears Point, the drivers try to get into the outside pit location,
as at "Gilligan's Island", you incur a 15 second penalty due to the
fact you don't take as long to enter the pits.

On other tracks, the drivers try for the front straight pits, for obvious
reasons, as you get to pit first from the front straight pits.  Other
drivers must wait until the pace car reaches the back straight pits.

It is my understanding that NASCAR will finally revoke the Champion's
Pit choice after this year.

Hope this straightens out a few things...
