Thriller and Monster II report!

by MH » Wed, 19 Aug 1998 04:00:00

I have a Thriller PCI 4mb and a Monster II 12mb in the same
system. I use 3dcc to switch which card I want doing D3D. Of
course, I only do it for testing, because the Monster II is
so much better at D3D. I have an Abit AX5 with P5 266 MMX,
64mb EDO. (Soon to be Abit AH6, Celery 266 at 400 or
more{maybe!}, 128mb's CAS 2 PC-100 SDRAM!)

Here's a quick rundown of these cards and the sims and
games.

SIMS:

GPL demo - Thriller or Voodoo 2, Interesting dilemma here,
color looks better on Thriller, but I can run higher
resolutions on the Monster II, so I guess it all depends on
your monitor size and what res you want to run. 800x600 and
lower, go with Thriller, otherwise Monster 2.

NASCAR 2 - Thriller or Voodoo 2, Thriller is much better.
Only 2 small problems. The Rendition version only runs
inside Windows 95 (There may be a patch for this) and after
running NASCAR 2 3DFX, the Rendition version does not work.
If I want to run the Rendition version, I have to restart
the system. Works fine the other way around.

Indycar 2 (CART) - Thriller, Rendition version is the only
way to go, Three small problems, Won't run inside Windows 95
period, Indyfast only works if I start Winblows 95 and then
shutdown to MS-DOS mode (or create a shortcut to do the same
thing). Anti-aliasing doesn't work right, turning it off
makes the game much better (there may be a patch to fix
this).

F1RS - Monster II - the only way to go. Install Glide
version, apply patch or patches, very fast and much better
than D3D version on the Thriller. No problems I can think
of.

GP2 - Of course this old ass game doesn't use either, but it
runs better in MS-DOS mode. Very dependent on CPU, still fun
even though the graphics are really, really outdated.

SODA - Thriller -only way to go, fun, but the graphics were
2 years old when it was released. No Problems, graphics
slower than they should be on V2200, 266MMX, poor
programming I suppose.

]
GAMES:

NFS 3 Demo - what a hoot, where are Daisy and Roscoe?,
considerably better on Monster II.

Motoracer 2 Demo - considerably better on Monster II.

Monster Truck Madness 2 - considerably better on Monster II.

Andretti Racing - Install Glide patch, pretty, but not much
of a game, still considerably better on Monster II.

Quake - Unbelievably better on Monster II.

Quake 2- same as above.

Unreal - same as above.

Sin demo - same as above.

Forsaken - same as above.

Incoming - same as above.

Thriller and Monster II report!

Now there's a report that's worth something. Thanks MH!

I am considering slapping a Voodoo2 in along side my Stealth II S220 very soon. Your
data helps. Not that it impacts me, but I wonder how much difference an 8MB
Rendition card makes versus a 4MB. I understand that games that manage lots of
textures like, Quake 2, Unreal and perhaps GPL are choked by the 4MB of memory more
than they are by the chipset.
