I can run gpl with graphic on and get very nice frame rate with a PII 233,
64mb ram, abit lx6 motherboard, and intel740 8mb apg

This isn't meant as a whine, but as an advisory since I still see posts asking
about how it performs.

I have a 200MMX oc/225, 64MB, Pure 3D (Voodoo1), STB LS128 (ET6000).

Test: full graphics except ~50% detail, 640x480, 4 sounds (my usual), sitting
in the pits in practice mode (which is when it is only you), novice in an
Eagle (these two have little effect on the result).

With Voodoo1:  26 fps
With software driver on my STB LS128:  5.3 fps!

If I turn absolutely everything off, I get up to 17 fps with the software
driver.  Trust me, you don't want to play it in this mode.  Framerate drops to
13 fps in a 6 car race.  Again, you don't want to bother.  It looks like World
Circuit GP1's uglier twin.

I can't imagine even a 450 Mhz making enough difference.

So, I recommend taking a pass...or (much better option) get a cheap Voodoo1 if
you can't stomach spending $100 or so for a Voodoo2.  I'd opt Voodoo over
Verite since it'll see a lot more use in other sims&games and you're still
free with your 2D slot for the TNT or whatever new whiz-bang D3D 2D/3D card
comes out.

Okay, so I don't know what I'm talking about :-)
Good to get data points.

I'd go further ... recommend a pass if you can't stomach buying a
Pentium 2 300 at least. Anything less cannot produce acceptable
frame-rates for driving this sim.

How do you manage that?considering theres no D3d patch????

GIVE ME A BREAK!  I playin on a p225mmx (clokt 200) with 64 mb sdram,
and a 4 mb stealth 2 s220, and i can adjust detail levels to get very
driveable frame rates.  I get 36 in 640x480 with all details turned
right up except for mirrors (cars & track)
In race I get mid ***s at start and 25 or more depending on what

turn off crowds, if i am at the ring i turn off more.
Oh and I won't ferget to mention hi speed connect, cable

So, you think that ***s are drivable ?? huh whit 25% details ? no crowd and
NO mirror ? and sometimes you turning off even more ?

I beg to differ. With a iP166MMX overclocked to 250 MHz (2.5x100) and
a voodoo 1, I get stable 36fps in training (with an occasional drop to
30, but very rarely). This is with everything on but: quality
checkboxes, clouds,***pit textures, mirror textures and skid marks;
draw ahead bias to 50%, trackside objects to full, four sounds. In a
race with 12 AI, I get approx 28 fps, less during the start of course,
but more once they're all gone. Undoubtedly, it's better to have more
processor power, but the sim is far from undrivable with this setup.

Yeah, you do know what you're talking about.  Look at it this way:
if he spent approx. $450 (today) on the parts named above, he could
*double* his frame rate (to "very, very nice"? :) by spending another
$150 on a Voodoo2/12 or Hercules Thriller 8meg.  That's pretty
significant bang for the buck.  What size CPU (and how much would it
cost) for the same benefit?

GPL CAN be run on a K6-233 with Thriller 3d 4meg and full detail.  Get
arround 30fps.  It isn't impossible.

I don't even find 20s REALLY driveable in GPL. On my old P200 I had to
run it in "arcade view", which presents it's own problems (ie., less
visual car feedback). Only at 30+ fps am I able to perform serious
skid recoveries - not to mention heavy braking without spinning.
