Dunno about the legality of this, but what bike racing sims lack
compared to the real thing (which I've done until it broke
my wallet and threatened to break my body) is FEAR.

A pair of spring loaded lump hammers aimed at the knees
and a disc grinder over the knuckles ought to do it....

lol!!

IMO I don't think you can sim a bike. I've played GP500 and WSB etc (hey
'No second prize' on the amiga just plain rocked), but since getting and
riding (and breaking) the real thing I don't think I'll ever find a bike
"sim".
At speed so little steering input is used. Other moethods take over:
counter steerng
body placement,
*** off the bike,
getting behind the screen,
throttle blippin on braking
clutch slipping
etc
I just can't see a way to get what these factors into a sim controller.
As you ride a bike, you know that it "goes where you look"

I never used to have fear riding (well apart from watching for others
trying to get me), find out what I have now

Don't all types of sims suffer from this though? In fact, I dare to say that
/any/ computer game lacks fear. Just picture yourself running through a
maze, being chased or even eaten alive by ghosts! That's no picknick either
;-)

Hmm, it's doable... :-)

Very true, Ice, I guess shoot 'em ups could have guns aimed at the player,
or war games could blow you up at random with friendly fire too...

I like Steve's list of things bike sims dont do, also:

bug splats
the smell of castor oil & hot ***
red flags & restarts
sweat in your eyes
apalling paddock toilets

Never say never.  Once they can simulate the pulses nerves deliver at
the brain, it can become scary.... <g>

The SV650S isn't fast enough to scare you, try an Yamaha R1..... :-P

Remco (who ownes an R1, and luckily a  good washing machine to clean
my pants after I scared myself once again....)

It's going to take more time than mastering the ring!

Ahem,

I'll start my response by stating that every time *I*'m coming up to
Masta in GPL trying to pull a Really Fast One, my brain does a *very*
good impression of Utterly *** Sudden Death Angst and Wild Untamed
Rampant Self-Preservation Instinct,...

..and I'll end my riposte with this absolutely *classic* Usenet quote
from some years ago:

"DOOM not scary?!  DOOM scared the hell out of me on a 386sx/25 4MB RAM
and an 8-bit sound card.  If you have not jumped out of your seat at
least on one occasion due to a big pink shaved gorilla mofo gnawing on

Actually (not being able to lap Nurby without crashing) trying to
take Masta as fast as possible, or for me, also the right hander before La
Carriere is proper heart in the mouth stuff because if you stuff it youve
wasted the whole lap, whereas at somewhere like the Glen you get another
go in just over a minute.

I read somewhere an interview with one of the 60's GP drivers talking about
screaming in his helmet as he went over the finish line at Rouen into the
flat
kink!

Hehe. On the other hand, a Save feature would be nice. ;-)
That way, you wouldn't need sims (before people start thinking in
other directions). :)

Those of us who have played Return to Castle Wolfenstein may remember the
sudden shock of having a zombie break out of the wall you've just walked
past...<g>
Hell, the *original* Castle Wolfenstein(on an Apple II+) had its heart-stopping
moments.<g>
