GPL best video performance?

by Do » Fri, 15 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I am building a new computer to run GPL on and am new at GPL.  I
really like it and want to buy the right hardware the first time.
I am building a PII 450 w/128mb RAM, ASUS motherboard.......
and need to find out is it possible to run a Rendition and a VooDoo2
card at the some time and will it get better frame rate the just one
or the other.
If so what Rendition card is the best.
I also understand that two VooDoo2 cards can be linked together
for the ultimate performance. Has anyone done this and is it worth the
$$$$$?

Thanks
Don H

Don,

I think you run DFX or Rendition (or open GL) acceleration not 2 together.
I'd be inclined to buy a really good Riva TNT based card - try running with
that (you'll need the opengl patctch) and then if you feel you need to then
add a 3DFX card on top. That said if yr building a machine specifically to
run GPL only (you rich man you! :-)  ) then I believe the Hercules thriller
(which is rendition based) is the way to go.

I use a Diamond viper 550 through a Pii 350 overclocked to 392 & GP is
running fine. Overclocking the motherboard to 112 made a big improvement.

It is indeed possible to run both a Rendition card and a Voodoo2 in the
same system, but while the game is running, you'll be using one or the
other, not both simulataneously. If GPL is your only concern, there's
little reason to go with Voodoo2. A Rendition 2200 card will offer
probably the best overall performance in GPL. If other sims are of any
concern, then grab a Voodoo2 as well.

The Hercules Thriller 8Meg is generally considered the top of the line
in Rendition based boards.

I'm runing a pair of Monster2's linked. I wouldn't worry about it tho if
GPL is your only concern. Just go with the Thriller 8Meg and you'll be
more than pleased with the results.

I am running a voodoo2 on a celeron 300a at 450mhz and needed to buy a new
primary card.  Decided to buy the 8mb thriller since I have heard so much
about it regarding GPL.  With the exact same settings set in GPL, while in
the pits my 12mb voodoo2 had 3fps more than thriller 8mb.

At least my 2d applications are sharp now.  But I think I may return the
thriller and buy a less expensive primary vid card.

Just my 2 cents
Peter

        Hi Don,

        My system: PII-450, ABIT BH6 m/b, 128M RAM, Matrox Mil G200 8M AGP, 2x
Diamond VoodooII 12M'ers, AWE64. The difference being 36.13FPS rock
solid each time, every time with 14-16 people on-line. Graphics set to
1028 x 768, mirrors set to cars only, sound set to 4, dust and smoke
turned off, as well as crowds. Every other option on.
