GPL - heresy!

by David Butte » Tue, 11 Apr 2000 04:00:00

The recent "background music in GPL" thing got me thinking. So this
evening, just for fun, I did this:

Fire up GPL.
Turn down number of voices in GPL to 4.
Leave GPL.
In background, run a "MIDI jukebox" type program with some suitable
mid-sixties tunes (Beatles, Beach Boys etc) and set it to random play.
Fire up GPL again.
Adjust volume so both music and engine can be heard.
Get into Lotus.
Drive!

It's actually enormously good fun. There's no hope whatsoever of a good
laptime, as you can't hear the engine properly (say 1:10 at the Glen),
and frankly I didn't care; but it is, as I say, a most enjoyable
experience - I was just going around Stavelot as we got to "makes the
Indy 500 look like a Roman chariot race now", and it couldn't help but
make me grin like (even more of) a maniac.

(I worry about this post. After all, I'm admitting to taking GPL less
than seriously, which some people may view as a*** offence...)

I can't see this as being any worse than running around Monte Carlo in
a 356 while listening to Billy May or Stan Kenton.  Not that I would
do such a thing.... :)

Couple of other albums from 1967 that could suit GPL, but I think that
psychedelic rock suits better GPL than surf rock :
(load them in your CD Tray, and adjust the volume to hear or not your
engines)

- Pink Floyd : Piper at the Gates of Dawn (psychedelic at it's best!)
- The Beatles : Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
- Younger than Yesterday : The Byrds
- Surrealistic Pillow : Jefferson Airplane
- Disraeli Gears : Cream
- The Doors : The Doors
- Santana : Abraxas
- Are you experienced? : Jimi Hendrix

how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.

My top 10 would have to be......

1/ Tell Laura I love her (nobody knows what happened that day, How his car
overturned in flames) ...Start at any Vroc race.

2/ Good vibrations. (Driving out of sand traps with FF enabled)

3/ Pick yourself up, dust yourself down, start all over again.... Start at
any VROC race <G>

4/ The long and winding road ...Played at the Ring. (Wonder if Greger could
ever do a lap in the time it takes to play the song)

5/ Hey Jude...For those of us who need considerably more time....

6/ Speedy Gonzalez....Everybody's collection has a naff record somewhere <G>

7/ I'm picking up Bits and Pieces .... Start of any VROC race <BWG>

8/ Needles and pins....Most effective 1/2 way thru a grand prix.

9/ 8 miles high....After hitting a wall at the start of any VROC race on an
oval

10/ You make me wanna Shout....Start of any VROC race

Competition structure not finalized yet, but it will be hotlap-by-way-
of Quick Race Mode, using replays with race length set to its minimum
setting and no AI cars on the grid. Best lap is displayed (at end of
race) by hitting the spacebar key, screenshot of same by hitting F12.
Replay program is available, the Decrypt half of the program will (of
course) not be released.

Wouldn't know where I could pick up a copy of the original 'High
Voltage' (Australian release, one with the dog peeing on the
transformer) would you? I agree that Bon Scott made the group.
