Is GP3 Worth Buying for a 450MHz, Voodoo 3 System?

by Chris Help » Thu, 03 Aug 2000 04:00:00

I have a P2-450 system with a Voodoo 3 3000 card. Until I feel ready to
shell out $2000-odd for a new system with onsite warranty (needed for work),
my only upgrade options would be Voodoo 5 or 256M of RAM (128M now), as I
will lose my onsite warranty by replacing CPU or MB.

Is it worth buying GP3 for this setup? What kind of fps and CPU occupancy
can I expect at 1024x768 resolution?

Thanks,
Chris

Sounds like GP3 is not worth buying no matter what system you have.

Hell yeah Chris,
I'm just on a P2-350 and 16MB voodoo Banshee....
With full detail I can get over 20ftps and PO of less than 100 except on
starts as is to be expected.

Of course I suppose I'm ignoring and denying the fat that I have a low frame
rate aren't i, I'm ashamed:-(

Do you have the game, or are you just going by what everyone says?

I have the game and have no problem with it.  You must remember that
because of the amount of people who greatly anticipated this game and
the numbers who bought it, as a matter of course there are going to be
a lot of unhappy people.  You'll mostly hear from those who are
displeased, since those who are not are probably playing and not
jabbering.

The only issue that I might have with the game is its lack of online
play.  Haven't even tried to see how well it might work (IPX and
Kali)on the net.

I'm sorry, but any negative posts that focus mainly on a game's poor
graphics or sound-- unless they detract significantly from a game's
realism-- are not worth considering.  It's really-- in the case GP3--
the physics, realism, replayability, and total enjoyment of the game
that concerns me.

Everyone's complaining about how you need a huge system to run this
game.  I have a pII 400, 128 RAM, with a voodoo 3 3000 (AGP)and the
game runs just splendidly, even with all stuff on and at 1024, though
I prefer to run the game at 800, to improve performance.

I do have one question about CPU occupancy.  In the readme file it
says that running the game over 100% occupancy will take away from the
game's realistic play.  It also says that you try to tweak the game so
that it runs at or below 100%.  What is acceptable as far as going
below 100%?

Thanks,

I bought it (but I'm nobody really).
It runs great on my PII 450 128mb Voodoo 3000 AGP  with SBlive and MS
sidewinder USB (non force FB).
Its OK for hotlapping on the maximum resolution (which  the in game
grafix calibration recomends I use) but i prefer to drop down to the
second highest resolution for raceing which gives me 130-140% processor
occupancy at the start when lots of cars on the grid in front of me,(as
usual I am never on pole position)and then drops to 70% occupancy and
smooth frame reate usualy by the first bend.
the only thing that hogs processor time is the moke effects.
If you like winged cars buy it.(its totaly different to GPL and i think
the reason may be that it simulates different sort of cars and tracks.
GPL is old no downforce cars, which are like the cars we drive everday
so we have a decent idea what they should feel like, and modern F1 cars
with awesome downforce and super sticky tyres which are exactly the
sort of cars myself and 99.9999999999% of other people within this
forum have never driven.)
And the realistic weather in GP3 is superb (i know what rain looks like)

I don't know about GP3, but take from the voice of experience, most on site
warranties arn't worth the paper they are written on. Check it out VERY
carefully before paying  dime for one of these.

Save your money.  It is not worth upgrading your computer for Gp2.5.

I am running GP3 on a celery clocked to 448 with v3 3000, 128mb ram and awe64,
its tuff in a race when cars are nearby, but for hotlappin its fine.
even at 800x600 PO gets quite high in a race, but hotlappin you can run at 1024
no probs,

Well, its a lot of personal choice really.
The game wont stay at exactly one particular occupancy throughout
the whole race.   As you pass other cars, or pass bits of complex
scenery the occupancy will increase, and similarly if you are driving
by yourself on a simple bit of road with little scenery then the
occupancy will go lower.
If you dont mind the occupancy getting slightly over 100% once or
twice a lap then you can run it at an average of 90ish, but if you
really hate it ever going over then you can decrease textures and stuff
so that it normally runs around 70%ish.

As for myself, I need a new computer.   A measly 300Mhz machine
with 32Mb memory and an el-cheapo $50 video card, and I can
barely run the game at all with practically everything taken
off.

fine.  Admittedly I have to drop some detail and run at 800*600 in a race, but
it still seems to run OK with Occupancy below 100 except at the start of
course.  The problems start when you try to race in the wet, which REALLY slows
things down.  Until I upgrade, I have more or less given up on wet racing :-(

You're listening to the wrong people then, probably to guys not even
having the sim or expecting GP5... after fixing the problem I had with
the MSFF, this sim steals the show of any other sim, at least for quite
some time.

Mine is P2-450 with a V3 2000 overclocked to 166Mhz and GP3 runs fine. I
have a LWFF wheel and the CPU is around 100 with all the graphics on apart
from some mirror textures. I don't know for sure but an MSFF my hog more
cpu, depends what you have.

Woh.....that IS impressive!  Just shows how much GP2 is in there!! Not that
that is necessarily too much of a bad thing!

Ash

x-no-archive: yes

It's perfectly playable on my K6-200 in software mode (It won't recognise a
voodoo1). It looks good enough in 640x480, and I get 15fps with a PO of
below 100% most of the time. The PO is unaffected by FF or rain.

I can't wait to see what it's like in 1024x768 when I upgrade.

ram, and I get excellent performance from GP3 at 1000 x 800.

I have most graphics on (some off in mirrors) and run at 25fps and the
PO stays below 100% most of the time (except at race starts) and goes
quite low when on my own on the track (50 to 70%)
