I'm probably going to upgrade from PIII 700 to Athlon 1.4 soon.  I am going
to keep my Voodoo 5 card because of the FSAA quality.  Anyone running a
T-Bird 1.4, Voodoo 5 combo in Nascar 4 (2XFSAA) and what kind of framerates
are you getting?   How about with full field of cars visible?  Thanks.

Brian,
  I am running a 1.2 Gig Tbird with a V5500 card at 2xaa 1024x768. My
framerate
varies between 35/50 FPS in N4. It is very drivable for me. My brother has a
1.4 Gig
Tbird but uses a Nvidea III card. His system varies between 60/70 FPS and is
more
fluid and drivable than mine.
Myself being a self proclaimed NVidea hater  'they are the evil empire' I
plan on
getting a new ATI 8500 card when they come out hopefully within the next
couple
of  weeks.
Bottom line,  I think going from a PIII 700 to a Athlon 1.4 you will be
very happy
with the results and down the road moving to a next generation graphics card
will give
you yet another big jump  :)

Dave,

Sounds like good news re frame rates.  Right now I usually get between 17-33
depending on track and # of cars visible.  In a pile up with several cars it
really creeps along slowly.  30-50 FPS sounds real good!  I have also
resolved never to go over to the enemy, although with a lack of choices in
the future, I may not have much alternative!   I just can't give up that
great FSAA and I hear Nvida's FSAA solution is poor so far.

I thinking of getting an Abit KG7 Motherboard with DDR ram.  What
motherboard do you have if I may ask?

Heard of any issues with KG7 (no raid) and V5?

Thanks

Brian,

I'm using an Asus A7V133 because I wanted to use my SDRam. My brother
got an Asus A7A266 which uses DDR Ram. Both support the 266 bus between
the processor and chipset.
Abit is definitely a good solid company but I have no experience with
them.
As far as future graphics options are concerned check out the following
review.
Good luck to you.

I'm at 800x600 4xFSAA with a 1.33 GHz getting 18-30 fps with every setting
maxed.  42 cars visible in front and behind, max detail, etc.

The one thing to check with with newer mb's is where the Video card slot
is.  THat dang V5 of mine is sooo long it just barely cleared the memory
slots.  I too hate to consider the 'other' brand, but if N4 and later sims
will be your racing of choice, they do do a better job frame-rate-wise.(is
that a bolloxed sentence or what?)  :)

I would suggest dropping to 2xfsaa and benchmarking that.  18 to 30 fps is
dropping down there quite low.

I am going to go from P3-800 to 1.4 TB, and from GF2MX to GF3
(hopefully) later this week.  Supposedly the GF3 FSAA implementation
is much much better than the GF2's.  I think the processor should make
a whale of difference, especially in single player.  I'll post my
results.

If I went to 2xfsaa I'd raise the resolution up a few notches to compensate.

IMHO.

I agree with you...but you are paying a framerate price for the good
looks.   Y'know it sure is easy to get spoiled by stuff like fsaa.  After
you have used it for a while....the non aa stuff just looks much worse than
what we used to think it did...
  Have fun...

With a 1.4 T-Bird and Gainward GF-3, no overclocking:

N4 at 1024 x 768 x 32, no FSAA: between 65 and 85 FPS.
   at 1024 x 768 x 32, "quincunx" FSAA, between 45 and 65 FPS.

3DMark2001 = around 5500 w/o any FSAA.  I did this mostly just to see
if I was in the ballpark, or if my system had any serious problems
that needed fixing before I finally got back to ***.

This combination does seem to make a BIG improvement where there is a
full field of AI, more smooth, less stuttering, etc.  Even so, it
still happens every so often that it seems to hiccup, briefly.

I haven't tested what happens in 'the big one' at Tally yet... should
be better than the slideshow I used to experience with P3-800 and
GF2MX.
