Where a crane then picks up your car from your pit and dumps you on the
track, possibly in front of an approaching car.

Paul,

You left out the "lie" part.

Of course, they didn't. It was just a joke slamming Lucas Electrics at the
time.
My personal experience with British cars I owned at the time with Lucas
electrics wasn't that bad, only one electircal fire, and everything else
seemed to work okay after a well placed thump every now and again. Not
really bad compared to the Italian  counterparts of the time.

My favorite British sportscar bumper stickers:

"Why do the British like warm beer?
They all have Lucas refrigerators!"

"Lucas --- Prince of Darkness"

"The parts falling off this car are of the finest British
manufacture."

"Help stamp out tall dogs!"

All in fun! <g>  (former owner of two Mk 1 "bugeye" sprites and two
Mk1. MG Midgets... I honestly don't know what came over me!)

Phew! I thought I was pretty "up" on the US space prog of the 1960s and had
never heard a thing about Lucas being involved.

Obviously, when you stop to think about it, they weren't. :-)

I have a (home-made) sticker in the rear window of my MG-Y which says "The
oil dripping from underneath this car has been lubricating the finest
products of British craftsmanship......or what's left of them"!

No it isn't. Both require you to pit in and serve a time penalty. You only
usually get a DQ for reversing on the track. Of course, it's possible to get
a DQ if you fail to serve your pitstip at the correct place. IE, your own
stall in front of your pit board.

It's the human face of F1, I suppose....makes we mere mortals realise that
even geniuses (geneii?) like CC were total ***s at times.
