Pit strategy on ovals

Pit strategy on ovals

We don't see much Indycar racing here in the UK (in fact none at all
since Mansell left the scene) so I'm not aware how teams generally
approach pit strategy - particularly on ovals. Given the traffic
density and yellow flags on ovals do teams just fill up the tanks
and go for as long as possible or is there a bit more thought to it.

What prompted this question was that I had two races at Loundon. The
first I went for the crude approach - filled up the tanks and stayed out
as long as possible. I had to come in twice.
With this approach I actually won the race by
about 8 seconds (very exciting stuff).
The other night I thought I'd put some thought into it. I went for a three
stop strategy. Having lighter fuel loads gave a distinct speed advantage
but becuase of yellow flags I was never able to pull away far enough
for it to work. I eventually came off on lap 151 in 7th place.

I suppose the obvious follow-on question is what about road races?

cheers

Alan

My stragety is to estimate about how many stops it will take to complete a
race and from there estimate about which lap I want to make each stop.
That usually gives me some idea of how far I have left to go until my next
stop.  The most important thing though is to keep an eye on your fuel
mileage.  If you only need 5 gallons of gas to finish the race, you don't
want to spend time filling the tank to 40 gallons.  On what you believe
will be your last stop, get only as much gas to get to the finish SAFELY!!
You don't wanna run out now, do you?  <g>
