Does anyone know if there are any driving simulatiors that aren't racing and
that have good good graphics?  Not graphics like ford simulator.

This may be a dumb question, but why?  Why would you just want to
drive around?  If you need to that bad, just get in your car...

well, for one, it would be cool to have an auto sim to help people
learn how to drive. Stoplights, signs, pedestrians, 4-way stops...
I've never really thought about it much, but it could be a cool thing,
and very profitable if it could somehow be made "official" for
"student use", etc.

On another token,  imagine having a sim where you could go to a sim of
the actual town you are visiting,  can choose the actual car you'll be
renting there, and, say, drive from the airport to the hotel! I think
that would be a sell, if only for novelty. I have no idea what sort of
detail you could actually fit on a CD- but the sort of detail you see
when driving Monaco on Psygnosis' F1 (sorry, still only playststation
AFAIK) would be enough, jsut for *all* streets, not just one course.
Virtual Karts does a pretty nice job, too. I imagine in the future
they'll fit everybody's house in a program, and people will buy it
just to be able to drive past "their house" circa xxxx. What a
thought!

OR...

You could get in a bog-standard car, in any town, I don't care much, and
simply put your foot down. You'd be slammin' over kerbs, bouncing over
speed bumps, avoiding normal respectable ppl driving about and taking
shortcuts down thin muddy tracks. Call me a budding joyrider, but I
played some game in the arcade [by Namco I think] where you start off
driving on a street before moving to country roads. You have to dodge
busses and the like, and it's a damn good laugh. I mean, CAN YOU IMAGINE
DRIVING THE WRONG WAY DOWN A ONE-WAY STREET??!!?!???

On the subject of everyone's house being included in a sim, who would
have the time to program it? ;)

"The Need for Speed" dishes up some of what you're talking about.  There
are cops, normal street cars to weave in between at highly illegal
speeds, and plenty of delinquint driving opportunities.  You can even
get tickets or try to outrun the cops!  Race against a friend over modem
and relive the Magnum PI Ferrari chasing Ferrari through busy city
streets.....  A great game it is...

Sounds alot like an old game called Vette! which you drove around (San
Francisco?) a city. I don't remember if there was a point to the game, but
it was cool. I think someone is working on a remake.

You could also download a zx-spectrum emulator and play the game "Turbo
Esprit" in which you drive a <guess what> through the streets in search
for *** dealers.

If you want to, you can wait for traffic lights, overtake, use your
windscreen wipers, yes even shoot at pedestrians.

It's an English game, so you have to drive on the right side of the
road.

Good fun!
