Greatest race comeback ?

by Dave Henri » Thu, 15 Mar 2001 23:02:17

Punted at the first corner at Le Mans, Dave Henrie's 1968 Ford GT40 was
horribly damaged.
He got out...pulled out a toolbox and began repairs even as the field roared
by again and again.  After spending hours rebuilding and repainting his
steed Dave then set off in pursuit...with no time to change drivers or tires
Dave kept at for the entire 24 hours,
nipping the leaders at the line as they cruised in Formation thinking the
race was theirs.
Dave then went to the podium to shake the Dom Perrignon when his alarm went
off.....

>DE, at I think, Daytona when he did that 360 degree spin, never touched a
>thing,  and proceeded to win the race.

>It might have been Talladega.

>Either way, it was masterful.

You sure you're not thinking about Danny Sullivan at Indy in 1985?

Never argue with an idiot.  He brings you down to his level, then beats you
with experience...

>Prost started from the pits in 87 or 88 at Spa and finished 2nd, that was
>something to do in "modern" age technology, I think they didn't have fuel
>stops then, just tires...

>Anyway, it was a nice race to watch.

Scott Goodyear, at Indy?  He started last, and finished second to Al Jr. by the
thinnest of margins...<g>

Greatest race comeback ?

Greatest comeback I have been witness to is Ernie Irvan returning to racing (and
winning) after a crash that by all rights should have killed him.

I must also give him credit for realizing that there are things more important
than racing and when he had a second major crash at the same track, he decided
that he was being given a warning sign and got out of the car.  That was
definitely a bit of bravery.  Facing the unknown of being an ex-driver after
driving darn near all his life.

Ahhh.. Good one! I wasn't even thinking about that type of "comeback"
when I read that before, but that's a great example!
