Not to mention McLaren screwing race leader Coulthard out of a pit stop.

1995 - Jacques became the youngest ever IndyCar Champion at 24 years old. He
also won the Indianapolis 500 after being given a two lap penalty for
passing the pace car under a full course yellow (ie. no overtaking) and
became the first person ever to win the 500 after completing 505 miles.

One of the greatest race: in 1935 Tazio Nuvolari, driving an obsolete Alfa,
won a race at the Nurburgring, in a car far inferior to the Mercedes of the
Germans.

Jacques Villeneuve was two laps down at a moment of the race during the last
"REAL" Indianapolis 500.  He went on to win.

Yeah, I'd have to agree that was pretty amazing.  I think one of his
laps was yellow assisted, but he got the other one back on the track.
Really amazing work and well deserved victory.

I saw it in the museum at Talladega.  Unbelieveable!

How did he make up 2 laps without caution flags?

He was FAST that day.  I think it was a year or two before restrictor
plates (86 or 87).  Nobody could touch him on the big tracks back
then.

Greatest race comeback ?

Some thoughts...

Jacques Villeneuves Indy 505 is excellent.  Mind you, his performance
at Elkhart Lake the same season was pretty good to beat the Penske's.
It wasn't really a comeback, more like a "try and keep up til the end
and win" kind of race.  Also his performance at Laguna Seca to clinch
the title was a see-saw affair with puncture and spin, I think.  I
remember it was a battle for him to get the points to stay in front of
Al Unser Jr.  I'm not a huge Cart fan so hopefully someone else (with
a better memory) could expand on those performances.

In Formula one, two performances at Kyalami come to mind.  Prost has a
puncture in the Turbo Renault.  He gets lapped by his teammate (either
Arnoux or Jabouille, I forget which).  He comes back to unlap himself
and win the race.  Details elude me.  And then another one I vaguely
recall is Niki Lauda coming back and winning the race & championship
from Prost.  Again details elude me, but it was pretty scary as a
Prost fan to watch Lauda hunt the top6 down one by one.

Must add.  Renault where the only team with turbos and were way ahead
of the competition in performance.  Prost and Niki Lauda were
team-mates at Maclaren.  I think Niki won the world championship by
half a point, due to technicalities regarding the incomplete Monaco
race that year.

oh oh.  Almost forgot.  If anybody can describe the mayhem that
occurred at Monaco the year Ricardo Patresa won it, please remind us
all.  I have a vague recollection of complete and utter chaos of
drivers inheriting the lead and retiring on the last lap due to fuel
problems, etc.

Regards all,
Ian

PS! please don't rag me for my lousy uh, um, err  what was I, oh
MEMORY.
