I agree, puts the Canadian Rookies roads to shame.   Narrow, virtually
no guardrails, blind corners, rocks on the mountain side, wet ...

Oh yeah and idiots on Ninja bikes coming at you like video game
characters!

Anyone ever "Crank Da Kank" here?

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Nice scenic high-speed ride in the White Mountains of New Hampshire USA.

At least it was in the early 70's probably clogged with hikey bicyclist
types now from what Google shows.

Ah... the joys of getting away nowadays....

Note: Recreational passes are required at all trailheads.

Subject: [at-l] white mountain fees

In todays Union Leader the headline reads, President Clinton wants to make
the parking fees test program permanent in the whites and about 400 other
federal sites across the US.

What a surprise.I never would have thought...and the forest service is
really pleased and e***d too :o)

I'd rather get my wallet out in the parking lot, then at a campsite or
shelter!  I find it somewhat ironic you can pay for a campsite with plastic.

Definitely, the highways in the Peruvian sierras. Very treacherous, and you
get nice landscapes (including tunnels, bridges, snow, llamas, railroads...).
Ticlio is at 4680m a.s.l. the highest railroad station in the world.

Yes, Route 39 up into the San Gabriel Canyon was my "escape from the smog"
in my LA Day's.

Also Big Tujunga Canyon, Mt Wilson, Mulholland Drive, Sierra Nevada's, etc.

Yes, there is adequate shoulder on this road so it gives the impression of
being "wide" but there are so many off camber corners, 30km "recommended"
speed areas due to the road narrowing through rock cuts on some very steep
grades and enough idiots stopped around blind corners taking photos to make
this a very interesting drive. I've driven it so many times that I can see
every inch of this road in my head without any trouble at all and every time
I've driven it I've had a "memorable" moment where I'm either swearing at a
tourist or berating myself for trying to "make time" in a spot I know better
than to try it... while hoping my heart will come down out of my throat and
stop hammering away. If you wish to describe this as a "stroll in the park"
then I would have to leave it as your opinion.... either way, it can be both
a fun and scary road to drive.
As far as the original posters query goes... I have travelled a fair amount
and as far as "visually spectacular" go the view from this highway ranks
right up there with any other mountain road I've travelled when the weather
co-operates. Bright blue skies, snow capped mountains, and a road which
takes you right past some truely beautiful looking lakes that you'll find
yourself hard pressed to describe the true colour of the water afterwards...
hard to top.

Robin

Just driven on it... The Desert Road, between Waiouru and Turangi, North
Island, NZ. Its in the mountains (a volcanic plateau actaully) so its always
iced over, lotsa twisty bits, all off-camber, and beautiful scenery to boot.

And I didn't even mention the thick fog, the bus coming the opposite way
(probably with a very tired driver at the wheel), the deep cravice by a
hairpin curve and the rapids running at the bottom... And there's at least
one spot with a bridge right after a tunnel.
