When they're used as a race track, the Isle of Man.
170mph through hilly tree-lined country roads, then into the city.
100+ mph on twisting residential streets with square curbs and
buildings 5 feet from the race track.

As an avid motorcycle rider, the pucker factor of just watching this
dangerous spectacle is almost unbearable.
Sega tried to capture it in Manx TT a couple years ago, but didn't
really do it justice.

My favorite is Tioga Pass going into Yosemite National Park in California.
Cutting across the sides of the Sierra Nevada mountains while ascending to the
crest look out the passenger side window of your car and DOWN about 5,000 feet.
Reach the crest and look down in to beautiful Yosemite Valley...

One of the more vivid "oh SHIT" moments of my life happened on that
road.  I was putting along in my '80 Mazda 626, enjoying the fall
greenery.  Just as I went around one of the blind curves a pair of
crotch-rockets come screaming around from the other direction.  Leaned
WAY over.  I don't think anybody was in any danger, really, but it was
quite startling to see these two very loud, very fast moving objects
appear out of nowhere, blast by me at what appeared to be a ridiculous
rate of speed, and then disappear in my rear view around the curve.
The songs of the two bikes hit a really cool harmonic as they went by.

The road to Hana on the north shore of Maui is pretty spectacular.
600 odd curves in 50 miles.  Lots of cliffs and bridges.

The saddle road on Big Island is pretty neat too.  I don't know if you
could really do the high desert and lava moonscape visuals justice in
a computer game, though.

Hey, didn't that crop up Looking Glass' age-old Car and Driver?

Looking rather polygonal, I seem to recall.  Although then again, for all
its spectacular graphics, does N2002 run on a 286/14 with 1MB of RAM?

You guys are all close...but the the best is the Belt Parkway in NY....
especially after dark...
It runs from the Verranzano Bridge east through Brooklyn into Queens.
It is a very narrow, four lane highway (2 lanes each way.)... it is fairly
windy for a major road. (In NYC "Parkways" were built to give motorist a
leisurely ride to the State parks.) with some decent elevation changes. The
armco barrier that surrounds the road is battered and torn from the
countless accidents.
While the speed limit is 50, that is universally ignored... People often fly
down this little stretch of road in the low to mid 70's. Which due to the
age of the road is really fast. And at night it just gets worse.
Huge multi-car pile-ups are rare in NY, except on the belt parkway, where
tailgating at high speed is the rule. This road is scary. And would make a
great video game, afterall the AI would be easy. Just program them to run up
your butt, and then cut you off when they pass.

the freeway coming down from chamonix in the valley has a VERY nice bridge
passing over the city at a very big height...

and since it's in chamonix that means snow and ice and it's also the road to
the mont-blanc tunnel with all the trucks going to italy...

Might I suggest the Icefields Parkway between Jasper and Banff in the
Canadian Rockies... huge elevation changes, twisty, narrow with cliffs
straight up on one side and shear drops that would most certainly be fatal
on the other. You also have to be on constant outlook for elk, bears, and
mountain sheep and if you manage to miss all of those you have to dodge the
70+ year olds driving R.V.'s of massive proportions who decide to stop in
the middle of this beautiful scenic highway to snap pictures. Also, it's
about a 3 hour drive but that's only if you manage to stick to the speed
limit! :-)

Robin

Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia, Canada, 300 km (190 miles). "the Cabot Trail winds
around the rocky splendour of Cape Breton's northern shore, ascending into the
majestic highlands of Cape Breton National Park. This magnificent highway is
carved into the sides of mountains that rise high above the shimmering waters of
the Gulf of St. Lawrence." Absolutely beautiful in fall colors.

It might be possible.  I'm pitching the title as a next-gen console
racer (i.e., Playstation 3, XBox 2). We don't even know what kind of
graphical muscle will be under the hood, but it'll be a lot.

Yep; Angeles Crest Highway is a good one too.  Lots of fast sweepers and
beeeeg drop-offs.  Great combination for focusing one's mind!

But the Icefields Parkway is (literally) a stroll in the park.  The road
is really wide, and never particularly challenging.

Well, how about some German Autobahn without speedlimit?
Or the Nrburgring Nordschleife, which is also a public road on
weekends?
Or some passes in the Alps, the high ones, and the twisty ones used
during the Rallye Monte Carlo?
