What are the world's most dangerous and visually spectacular highways?

No, I'm not a misguided lottery winner. I'm researching for a video
game. :-)

Look at original road courses--back when people raced on regular roads?

1st Watkins Glen (5+ miles) comes to mind, because it's my home track.
It's located in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of NY state.  The roads
are surrounded by hardwood trees which put on a fantastic color display in
the fall.  The corkscrew dive down to Stone Bridge (a narrow two lane
bridge with 3 foot high stone walls on each side) is so scary looking that
no one ever went off at that spot during all the early races (starting in
1948).

Read Denis Jenkinson, "Jenks: A Passion for Motorsport" to learn about the
European road courses.  His story of the Mille Miglia with Moss is
fantastic.

Highway 1 along the California coast, south of Monterey might fit your
description.

There is an 11 mile stretch in the Apalachians called, The Dragon, that is
supposed to be very good.  More turns than the old Nurburgring.

Yep, I agree.  Southbound from 101, tight winding road with blind curves
through the thick redwoods eventually popping out onto the coast for some
tight winding roads along seaside cliffs.  Does it get any better?  Well,
yes, if you ban RV's!!

Yup, 129 over Deal's Gap.  Been there, done that. (on my bicycle!)  318
turns in 11 miles, they say, but I was too busy trying not to get dropped to
count 'em.  Like being on a ride at the fair, and a lovely tune up for the
15+ mile climb to the top of the Cherohala Skyway.  Oops, wrong NG... or is
it?  Nahhh, the road's always chock full of sportscars and Ducatis.

Plus, with plenty of trees to run into, cliffs to run off of, and a river to
fall into, it definitely makes the cut for this thread!

SB

PS - I've taken Eau Rouge and Masta flat on my bike too; does that make me
an alien?  ;-)

Pah, it even got a yellow dividing line. Visually, yes, driving
challenge, none. :)

That looks like one wicked track! All we need is a straight
"backstraight" Le-Mans style, and this would make for some
fantastic driving ;-)

You could do worse than look at the Cat & Fiddle Pass in Cheshire, UK
- the local hospital (Macclesfield General I think) has the highest
rate of motor-cycle injuries in the UK.

I think in total it's about 7-8 miles long, twisty, undulating, plenty
of camber changes etc.  If you like woodland and moorland scenery, you
won't get any better (plus you pass the highest pub in England (yes,
England, not the UK) at the top - called the Cat & Fiddle)

Deal's Gap is nice, but it's fairly predictable.  There are many Swiss
mountain passes which will catch you out badly if you are not paying
attention.  Personally, I'd like to see a hill climb up the Stelvio Pass
on the Italian border.  It has a zillion corners.  The Klausen Pass in
Switzerland was a famous mountain race in the 30s, with the AutoUnions
thundering up the gravel road at outrageous speeds.

Try the Rimutaka Hills Road North of Wellington in New Zealand.. Bike riders
paradise - tight twisty road with a cafe at the top- Rimutaka Motorcycle
Caf - Pie in the Sky - at 555m . Great road but in winter it has some of
the highest recorded wind speeds on a public road in the world....

The Grossglockner road (Hochalpenstrasse) in Austria comes to my mind. Very
Scenic road over the alps of Salzburg.
