Is there any Race Simulator worth its salt on X-box?

by Paulo Sous » Tue, 15 Apr 2003 04:27:20

Have my PC, with Act Labs FF wheel, RS shifter, all the stuff... but its a
pain to put everything in place to play... . so I just bot an XBOX some
weeks ago, with a thurstmaster wheel.
Have so far bot sega gt2002 (good fun) , f12002  (have the PC version as
well.... and can tell you that the xbox version stinks), and Project Gotham
Racing (just got it yesterday... good fun, but rather have real circuits
than only street circuits.... and it looks too arcade for me, not a
simulator).
Does anyone have any game to suggest? Does anyone have an opinion on the
following Xbox games:
- Mercedes Benz World Racing?
- Total Immersion Racing?
- Lotus Challenge (heard that there is a Lotus 49 to be driven here....)
Is someone  from this group also going thru the xbox experience?  Any hints?

Unless some of these games bring me a very good surprise, have the feeling
that will be back to all the "hardwork" of setting up my computer space for
*** quite soon...

I don't have a X-Box, nor have a tried any of those games. However, I do
have a list of recommendations for games that you might want to go out and
rent.

NASCAR Heat 2002 ( http://www.racesimcentral.net/)
 and
NASCAR Thunder 2003 (
http://www.racesimcentral.net/)

We could also try to strongarm Infogrames to release Dirt to Daytona for PC
and X-Box. IMO, that has been the best sim I've played on a console. ;-)

Though, out of these two titles, I'd look into Heat before Thunder. The
latter may not be your box of chocolates.

I have HEAT, it seems pretty good, of course you will do a lot better with a
wheel.

I have several racing games for Xbox, but the only ones I really play
regularly are Rallisport Challenge, NASCAR Heat, and Project Gotham Racing.
The one I am really waiting for is Pro Race Driver.  The PC version was said
to be kind of arcadey, which IMO means it will probably be quite good on
Xbox.  Too much sim just doesn't work when you are using gamepad
controllers.  The number of realistically modelled cars and tracks blows
everything else away, so if it is even halfway decent that will be the game
to get for Xbox.

I'd second Rallisport Challenge, better than Sega GT at least.

Have you tried the newest V-Rally yet?  The graphics are probably the
worst of the 4 rally games I've tried, but the handling is similar to
RSC and it has a really nice career mode if you like that sort of
thing.  I've also enjoyed Colin Mcrae 3 if only for the fun damage
model, altho it suffers from the standard lightweight cars and
overdone magic sliding from previous versions.

I was looking forward to World Racing but have shied away thusfar
after reading reviews.  Pro Race Driver looks intriguing just for the
story mode, even if the racing is ultimately crap.  Apex had a lot of
promise in this area but fell flat on its face with the incredibly
lame attempt at making you feel involved in the operations of your
business, when you really have no control over anything.

Oddly, the xbox game I'm enjoying the most right now is World Series
2k3, which is very nice if tuned well.  Nothing in the racing genre
has really come close to the quality of Splinter Cell or the Sega
sports games, unfortunately.

Haven't tried V-Rally.  Tried a demo of Rally Fusion and didn't care for it.
I'm still trying to find a rental or demo for CMR3.  I play Rallisport a lot
with my buddies but the lack of a damage model seems to encourage them to
drive like idiots.  If CMR3 has a good damage model and still has 4 player
split screen racing that would be really good for us.  Then again, when I
have been able to get them to play Heat with me with damage turned on, they
keep whining about not being able to finish the race.  Go figure.

Mercedes Benz World Racing have gotten rave reviews by a whole group of
fellow Danish GPL afficionados ;)
It's no GPL of course, but the general verdict is that it's pretty realistic
and that its great fun.

I had an X-box some months ago... F1-2002 lasted all of 3 minutes before I
ejected the CD in disgust.
Project Gotham gave me quite a few hours of solid entertainment and
RalliSport Challenge was fun as well.
"Wreckless" was no big thrill, but the suspension movement on the buggy made
it a game I kept coming back to for 5 munite stints ;)

Btw. try asking here as well:

There's a lot of cool things in CMR3.  If only it had physics that were
somewhere near Rally Trophy....

I agree.

I wish Papy's first console/PC venture were a good WRC or BRC sim. =/

Forgot about Wreckless. =)  That's one that gets quite a bit of time
in my xbox as well.  The gameplay is basically note-for-note like the
driving missionsi in GTA3, i.e. smash this car, protect this car, go
to the airport, etc, but it's a lot of fun and the effects used in the
replays are awesome.

The cinematics in Wreckless and Kung Fu Chaos are both great actually,
and overcome some of the gameplay faults with both games.

MotoGP is by far the best racing simulation on the XBox.  It's not car
racing, but it is racing...and supports XBox Live which makes it even more
fun.  MotoGP2 is due out next month and should be even better now that THQ
has had almost a year to test their MotoGP series on XBL and work out the
kinks.
