InterAct V4 & FF light

Recently I purchased the InterAct V4 Force feedback wheel for use with
"Need for Speed: High Stakes".  Since the performance of this wheel is
horendus* with the force feedback (FF) mode enabled, I prefer to use
it with no force feedback.  The question I have is:  how can I be
certain that there are no FF messages being sent to the wheel when I'm
trying to play the game?  When I turn off the FF in the game controller
setup screen under the control panel the setting does not "stick"...
ie, it reverts back to FF mode even if I choose "Accept" or "OK".
Also, when I use the FF en/disable button on the wheel during the game,
the LED does not stay off!  I comes back on after about 20 seconds or
so.  Is this a hardware problem?  I have minimized all the force
feedback settings in the game but am not sure if this kills all the FF
communications.  Your feedback is appreciated.  Thanks!

*At least on my PII 300MHz with the wheel connected through a
Soundblaster Live.
