It's a text-based management simulator. I didn't try to learn it because it's boring.

It is a potentially excellent collection of bugs and inaccuracies that
is let down by having a half-baked game bundled with it. My advice is
give this a miss, and try threading a needle in a dark room whilst
wearing oven gloves instead. Much more fun, and far less frustrating.

regards,

Paul.

On the micorprose site they have info for Grand Prix Manager 2 which is
sounds like it might actually be worth buying it.  I don't remember any
changes except for being more involved with setups, but with all the
changes they listed it sounds great.  Just gotta wait and see. :)

I have recently bought GPM2 (and also own GPM1) and although they are
visually very similar, the difference in their playability is huge.
GPM1, as many in this group have stated, is full of bugs which make it
unplayable. GPM1 fells like the beta test version of GPM2, and
although within the manual they claim it to be a completely different
game, those who have persisted with GPM1 to any extent will be able to
play it easily (that is not to say win easily).

I'm still on my first season of GPM2, but a few improvements I have
noticed already are:

(1) A save game facility during Pratice / Qualifying and Race. This
was an annoying feature of GPM1. If you wanted a race you had to make
sure you had a free hour to watch it. At least you can just play
during the free time you have and save.

(2) Improved setup. There are a few more parameters that you can
change now, and instead of guesswork, your drivers give you advice and
which way to go with setup. Some drivers give better advice than
others, and different drivers prefer different setups (although
usually only slightly different).

(3) Improved AI. In GPM1, the second race (Argentina) was usually wet,
and the wet AI (even in the patch) was awful, such that without really
trying, my drivers could get a 2 or 3 lap lead over the field. Despite
that another bug meant that when the time reached 2 hours (because of
the wet) the car with the lowest number always won! Also, within a few
races Forti could end up on Pole position by 4 or more seconds. All of
these sorts of bugs have gone. The standard big 4 teams are
dominating, and only by getting good drivers/designers/sponsors/etc
will you be able to complete consistently with them.

Other than that the game plays much like before - except that you get
Stirling Moss' commentary, which does break up the race, but gets
annoying with user defined names, which he obviously can't pronounce.
Some sort of phonetic prounouceation system should have been possible.
The most annoying is Villenueve, who is not included because he is not
a member of the GPDA, and therefore the rights to use his name is not
included. Although I've put him in, Stirling calls him Newhouse, and
being as he's in a Williams, he gets mentioned often.

Any other comments from those who have used it more extensively?

Thanks
