Hi everybody...

I just want to say a few things about this GP3 "warez" that's got
out...

How many of you people here are actually software developers or have
any idea of the processes / schedules involved putting software
together?

If some of our projects got out even a few weeks before they are
released to staff, we'd be for the high jump - and completely unfairly
because usually the last few weeks see the knitting together of the
project - and therefore tens of pages of bugs, glitches and comments
FROM DEVELOPERS! - Imagine if USERS saw the software at that point...

What I'm basically saying is wait and see.

Oh - and there has been no hype for this game until the last two weeks
outside of the anal, enthusiast crowd. There has been a couple of
previews in motorsport magazines, and last week the pre-order forms
appeared in video game retailers. Hardly the hyped game of the
century...

Now... Windows 95. That was hype. I don't see GP3 on all the news
bulletins yet. A TV advert with the stones singing "Start Me Up" would
have been good though...

   Me. :)

Yes, I'd probably freak. It depends on the size of the project, the
malleability of the deadline, and so on. On the other hand, it would be nice
to know that so many people are eagerly waiting for it, and are prepared to
scour warez sites to take a look at it.

That's the best thing to do. I would advise waiting for the demo. It's my
opinion that game companies should release demo's as soon as possible,
preferably before the game goes gold.

Ultima 9, anyone? :-)

Agreed. But it really would help if companies were a little more
efficient on the demo front. GPL had two demos well before its release,
and they were reasonable indications of the finished product. Unreal
never had a demo (in the UK, anyway), so I didn't buy it. There's no
excuse for GP3 not to have had at least a limited demo like the
original Watkins Glen GPL one.

There's been a great deal of coverage in the UK PC magazines, and not
only the specialist sim ones. PC Gamer (UK) has been almost apoplectic
every time there was a delay. And our EBs have had the empty boxes
sitting on the shelves for *weeks* now in a very prominent position.

The hype has been in here...check some past posts for say the last 3 years
and you'll find out what hype people are talking about.

Many, so?

Wait and see what? The warez version is the final one.

You've been living in a cave for the last 3years? GP3 was one of the most
hyped racing simulator ever in this community.  It's "GP3 by Geoff
Crammond".  There is a myth behind this person (of course over-blown but
that's another thing.. ).  We had tease after tease after tease.
Screenshots, videos, information, etc...  What do you want more?

Well duh.

Empty boxes sitting on shelves is not an ACTIVE promotion, David...it's
PASSIVE.

GP3 has had no active promotion here (Oz) whatsoever. Yet GP2 was heavily
pushed.

You'll have to wait to find that one out, won't you.

You just said it... "in this community".

I'm with you Francois, there's no excuse if the final version is
lacking in the ways people are describing.  What the hell did this guy
do for four years????  Luckily there are other very talented folks
getting into the sim-racing business, so we might yet see something
that will surpass GPL.

Not just any shelves - in my local EB, they've put them tight at the
front, so they are the first thing you see when you look in the window.
They've put them exactly where the current "number 1" game normally
goes. In other words, they've changed the shop layout for one game. I
call that promotion.

So, do you expect GP3 to sell 100 million copies (or whatever W95
sold)?  That was (is) a piece of software that has effected virtually
everyone with a PC.  Apples and 900 pound watermelons, if you ask me.
