How do they do it????

by Neil Kanterm » Sun, 05 May 2002 00:57:54

I've recently started racing with N2002 and a MOMO wheel.  I'm still
definitely in the "rookie" racer category with about 10 online races
below my belt.  But I have NO idea how people can type chat out as
much as they do while racing.  I know about the canned messages
attached to the number keys and I don't mean those.  I mean full
sentences that were obviously typed on the spot during a race.  I can
get a few words out on the back stretch at Daytona if the fixed setup
we happen to be running pulls fairly straight, but that's about it.
Someone please enlighten me.

Another thing I'd like help on is assigning the buttons on my MOMO
wheel to anything other than the "Look left/right" that you can assign
in game.  I'd like to attach some of those canned messages so I don't
even need to go to my keyboard for those.  Another thing I'd like to
do is assign one of the buttons to scroll through the F keys one after
another so I can check fuel/tire status without going to the F keys.
Has anyone done either of these two things, and would you be willing
to help a rookie try and get it done.

Thanks for the help.  R.A.S. has been a great resource for us newbies.

No idea. People can do it in GPL too - I wonder if some of them have an
assistant (kid?) typing for them...

You can use the Profiler software to assign a single command to any button.
What you're talking about is more sophisticated though, and I doubt there's
a way to do it. The Profiler maps a button to a specific set of keypresses -
so you could map the button to send a specific chat message like "Passing
high" or "Pitting in" or whatever. What you CAN'T do (as far as I know) is
map the button to a _series_ of commands, so the first time you pressed it
it would be F1, second time F2, etc. That's the only way you could do the
second thing you're looking for.

You should be able to get your keyboard in a position where the F keys are
easy to scroll through without taking your eyes off the track though.

I have no idea how they do it either. I have my key board behind my wheel
and its one thing to get to it under yellow, but no way am I doing it at
race speed.

I too have the MOMO and I have the following auto chats set up.
Left side buttons                            Right side buttons
Pit in                                              pit out
pass low                                        pass high
sorry                                              thank you

I use the wing man software to create a custom profile for nr2002.
under that profile you can assign new actions to the buttons. You'll need to
do one of two things. I do the first.
option 1
a) add a $ to the end of all the auto chat messages on the player info
screen. The $ acts like an enter/return key stroke. with out it you'd have
to hit the 1 key then the enter/return key to send a message.
b) in the wingman software map each button to the give the number of your
choice.

option 2
before mapping the buttons you need to enter the options to select record
pause. Then when you record your keystrokes make sure you do it as 1 enter.

With either of those options all you'll need to do is hit the button and
away it goes.

Gamecommander 2 ?

This is a voice deal where you can say things and it does stuff.  I use a
bunch of custom chats.

While all the suggestions offered here are good ones, there are still people out there that can type
as well.

Any links / info to share John?

Does it "steal" much system resources / framerate??

Here you go Ed.  www.gamecommander.com  You can buy/download it there, and
it's also usually available via cd in stores.

Nope, doesn't use any resources at all, including bandwidth.

Depending on your mic/soundcard, it may need some tweaking, as the default
settings tend to be to "loud", meaning, they cause environmental noise to
generate commands.
I.e., a cough makes a command work, etc.

But once I tweaked mine, I very rarely have false commands.  Can't
remember the last time to be honest.

people out there that can type
Yes and there are those that can stay between the green areas all the
time too.  It's amazing the abilities some sim-racers display.

NRAssistant, by Samuli Takala, will scroll thru the F keys, & a

Like I wrote not long ago here, non-FF drivers can easily put a hand out of
their wheel and blind type on the keyboard without looking at it.  It's more
difficult for FF drivers.  It's pretty easy to press T with one finger, each
letter then enter.  They teach key typing in school I think now? ;)

Not 'easily' for everyone.  It depends on where your keyboard is in relation to
your wheel, obviously.  Mine is *behind* my wheel, so I can't reach it easily
to type.  As a result, I usually don't chat or respond to any chat during
driving.

I'm assuming it's some kind of voice recognition software?  Surely that
would steal some CPU time?
