Can we get some sort of word on how many opponents we can expect at certain
Baud rates?

I run at 31.2kbps (so much for 56k)
and what about slightly slower and faster modems? Will we need a cable
modem\ADSL to get a 44 care field going? Just wondering.

You certainly won't be the host....
Looking at GPL, which "should" be more
hardware intensive and therefore the results
for N2000 should be at least slightly better
results.  However with GPL via VROC the
recomended # of players you could host would
be about 4.  so with N2000 I'd guess a # of 4-6
"MIGHT" be appropriate.
BUT>>>  If Sierra is doing the hosting via
high speed access, then you might realistly
expect a large # of participants.  Frankly
using the NROS model, the limit of 24 is
RARELY reached in the free demo area.
Most pickup races are from 5 to 15 drivers
so the Magic 44 limit is almost a Moot point.
About the only time this # would become a
factor would be in a league situation where
you have approximentally 44 or more
drivers.(imagine not qualifying...)
So I have to ask...why is getting 44 drivers
important in an online race?  2nd...What
modem do you have?  Many companies have
firmware upgrades that will increase your
connect and throughput speeds.  3rd...If
you have a winmodem, throw it away...now!
4th...Other than a consumer, I have NO
connection with Papyrus so take EVERYTHING
I say as merely guesswork.

I have a USR winmodem. Why should I throw it out? I'm not that concerned
about it making me use windows, and it can't hurt my processer (450 P2) that
much.

Winmodems eat clock cycles in the cpu AND the bus(I think)
Allison Hind has a few good articles on modems on her website,
I think she agrees that GPL is SO resource hungry that even
just a few ticks drain on the cpu degrades online play.  Now
I'll restate that N2000 "should" be less cpu intensive than
GPL but heck with 3d posisitonal sound, 16 bit graphics,
etc  it won't take much to bog down that shiny P2.
I have a Diamond Supra Express.  when I first got it,
I only connected at 31.6 to 33 kbs.  after the Firmware
upgrade I get 48kbs about 95% of the time.
If your focus is ONLINE ***,,,and by this I mean
racing or Quake II or III or whatever,,,the winmodem is
just that little be extra drag...plus it consumes large ammounts
of system memory as I just now recalled....some users with
64 megs of ram were getting lots of lockups.  after they
upgraded to 128 the problems disappeared.

how much did that Diamond Supra cost?

ok so I took took your advise to heart and called my local Hardware place
(you know a real one, not Staples :) ) andthey agreed with everything you
said, but when they heard where I kived they said that my phone lines are so
bad anyways that there wouldn't be an improvement. The good newws is that if
I moive just across the water to canada I can geta 400k rogers cable hook
up. :) and social health care. :)

Why 42/44 drivers?  Because it is AWSOME.  I have raced in many full 24
man fields, and racing with 42 people at C***te or Dega or Atlanta
will be fantastic.  Heck, even 35+ at Bristol will be unbelievable.
Just this ONE little upgrade (going from 24 to 42) online racers will
make this new game well worth the money.

Note:  The 42 player option PROBABLY will be either on a high powered
Sierra or TEN/NROS server ONLY.

With 40+ cars (hopefully still running) no matter what position you are in
the race, you most likely have someone near you to race with.

On TEN it's not uncommon to not have anyone in your mirrors, and only a hint
of a lapper ahead of you.

A 44 Car Dega race on Ten.

What a sight that would be to behold...

A dent dent here, a dent dent there, here a dent there a dent every
where a dent dent...
