"civilian" driving sim?

by andre » Tue, 20 Mar 2001 08:06:41

hey all -

just wondering if anyone know of any "civilian" driving sims -

by that i mean sorta in the way Flight Simulator compares to combat
flying sims...

Porsche Unleashed is the closest thing I've played (and loved), but I
need more...

Traffic jams, go-where-you-like, good physics - that type of thing.

thanks!

Why not just drive your own car?  Who would want to play a game of "Traffic
Jam",

Because the guy is asking for... geeze what a smart-arse comment.

Anyway, Microsoft Midtown Madness II is close to what he wants, but is
arcade-based.  There is also Sierra's Driving education software.

I really want to know? What the hell would you need a sim of every day
driving for?

And I almost forgot.  Ymenard,***off!  You have more smart-ass and
"attacking" post of anyone out there. When ever a flame war takes off, I a
can always find your post right in the middle of it.

Hmmm... I wouldn't say everyday driving. MS Flightsim is not all about
everyday flying either.

That's got to be about the lamest insult I read on here lately, BTW. Need to
use your imagination more.

Jan.

'cause i'm less inclined to drive my way out of a real traffic jam... by way of
front lawns & oncoming traffic and stuff!

oh, for a minute there (after reading your last post) i thought you weren't a
***.

why would you want a racing simulation when you can go out and race in real
life?

(i guess you don't have one)

...the difference is that in Driver or MidTown Madness, there's no
speed-limit, no 'real' consequences if you crash, and if the cops do catch
you, you don't end up in a real prison.  I'd say that makes playing these
games hugely different from driving round in your car.

Midtown Madness is a little *too* arcadey for my liking, so you might want
to take a look at Driver.

Raise your left hand if you can go out and grab your 67 Ferrari F1 car and
take a lap at nurburgring and then jump into your 2000 Ferrari F1 car and
take a lap at Monza right now. Raise your right hand if you can jump into
your street car and go cruising on the highway.  Andrew...I know there are
reasons for wanting the street car simulator...but you used a bad example to
prove that it would be a viable game.

Why would you read a group devoted to racing sims if you think they
are for people with no life? What does that say about your life?

Bingo....

Probably because in real life, traffic jams are frustrating. In a sim,
you could take out all your frustrations, hijack a 4WD (GTA style) and
drive over the top of the bastards. You could get in car chases,
perform stunts, etc - all the stuff you can't do on the streets
without either being arrested or hurt.

BTW, I remember, years ago, playing a game sort of like this called
"Vette". It involved racing a Corvette around San Francisco - you had
to navigate from A to B by whatever route you chose - kinda fun
re-living your favourite San Fran chase scenes (think Steve McQueen in
"Bullitt"), as well as see the sights (in glourious VGA) of San
Francisco. It was fun for its time, and my age (early 90's, early
***s) but I feel it wouldn't stack up too well with what we are used
to today.

C'mon, play nice...
