i didn't realize I was trying to prove it would be a viable game.

I remember some guy here asking the same question a couple years ago.
He said that his wife was recovering from some sort of physical trauma
and thought that a "civilian" driving sim might be a good stepping stone
for her before she got behind the wheel for real. Sounded logical to me.

And now I feel guilty for wanting it to smash my way out of traffic jams.

I just tried the London Racer demo. OK it's *not* a sim, in fact it's very
far from it. It's *so* arcadey it's not even a good arcade game, in fact.
The game is based around a race from London to Oxford on public roads, and
you have the police and Gatso cameras to deal with. A good idea I thought,
but because the "physics" model is so bad, overall as a driving game it's
crap.

On the other hand, it is a pretty game, with good-looking scenery flashing
past (as you take the hairpin at 140 mph in your Mini!). With some
anti-aliasing and a proper sim engine behind it this would be a really nice
game.

Try turning the Physics Realism all the way up, and then downloading
some of the great third party cars that are out there.
http://www.midtownmotors.co.uk/main.html is a good start for third party
cars. Many of the third party stuff is pretty realistic, within the
confines of the game engine anyway... Driver is fun too, if you don't
mind being stuck with late 70's cars... ;)
