GPL , poor FPS problem

Hi !

Since my new GFX card and GPL patch 1.1 , the fps in GPL has droped from
constent 36fps to medium 30fps :o(

Old system                              New Systeme

Celeron 300A overclocked 450            Celeron 300A overclocked 450
128 mb ram                              128 mb ram
3DFX Banshee                            TNT2 Ultra ( Xentor 32 )
GPL 1.0                                 GPL 1.1
Microsoft FF                            Microsoft FF
36fps->36fps                         22fps->32fps

so who is the problem ? Open GL Drivers ? Patch 1.1 ? FF effects ?

please help, thanks in advance !

You need the OpenGL beta patch,  available at the Papyrus site.

Well, i have it, otherwise i could'nt play GPL with my TNT2 ( i mean
in 3D hardware ).

i think that the problem come from the TNT2 drivers or the GPL patch 1.1

your tnt is causing the low fps problem you should open you core.ini
and set the mirror refresh to every 4th frame

Actually, I think it's the card.  It could be the driver, but it is not the
patch.  I have a TNT2 Ultra.  Using the OpenGL patch and the mirror frame
set to 4, I get about 15 fps with all stuff on, mirrors at minimum, and 19
cars.  This is both with the patch and without, at 1024x768.  It's not much
better at 800x600.

Now with my voodoo 2 card, same configuration, I get about 24fps, 1024x768
(it works at that resolution, don't know why), and slightly better fps at
800x600.

The way to go is certainly voodoo 2 (I have an 8 meg card).  As far as the
TNT2, the only game that runs better than the voodoo is SCGT, which runs
very well with my TNT2.

If you discover anything new, let me know.

As others have mentioned the big problem is that GPL was not written for the
Nvidia chip.  The OpenGL patch is beta and hopefully it will be refined for
better performance for the TNT.  I'm starting to feel about GPL the same way I
felt about GP2 when it first came out.  I have the most powerful hardware
available and I still can't run it with all features on in traffic and get a
decent frame rate.

There is a known problem with the patch causing slow frame rates for
some people.  Didn't happen to me.

The card can do better.  Slow CPU?  Wrong driver?

Only 24 fps with a Voodoo 2?  Gotta be a slow CPU.

The Voodoo 2 has enough memory to do 1024x768 without a Z-buffer, 800x600
with one.  GPL doesn't use a Z-buffer.

Celeron 366 at 533.5
TNT 1 with 2.08 reference drivers
Logitech FF wheel, FF on
SB16 (I'll upgrade when the MX300 or SBLive gets decent Linux drivers.)
128 MB
Win98
GPL 1.1
Mirror refresh set to 8
Cars only in mirrors, detail bias halfway, everything else on

I get 36-37 fps consistently when there aren't other cars in front
of me, at up to 1024x768.  Dropping to 800x600 or 640x480 makes little
difference.  Frame rate drops to about 20 when in the back of the pits
with 19 cars in front of me, about 30 in light traffic sometimes.
1152x864 through 1600x1200 work, but are slower.  (1600 gives about
9 fps, which means that when a card with four times my TNT's fill
rate comes out, I'm buying.  :-> )

Given ample CPU and the willingness to deal with laggy mirrors, the
TNT is okay for GPL.
