Do I need a 3D video card??

Most definately a 3dfx card... RAM is near dirt-cheap nowadays, save
that for a later date.. 32 MB is more than enough to play games with
so far...

Well, with 3dfx, the games appear different, as in 640x480 with all
sorts of neat "special effects"  like fogging, mip-mapping, etc. etc.
etc. You won't be disappointed with a 3dfx card.. I can almost
guarantee it.

If you buy a 3dfx, don't buy a Voodoo Rush card, nothing but trouble..
There are lots of games that don't run right or even not at all with
the Rush chipset. Just a plain old Monster 3D (by Diamond) or
Righteous 3D (by Orchid) or Pure3D (by Canopus) will do you just
fine.. The last 3 work in conjunction with your current 2D card via a
pass-through cable. It's easier than installing a sound card, IMO, you
don't have any jumpers to play with or anything like that. You'll be
amazed by the difference..
Well, the only game that the 3dfx will help you on that you mentioned
is I-76, and even then not much because Activision crapped out on the
3dfx patch.. Not very well coded at all.. BUT you will get a boost
from D3D games with a 3dfx, so be happy there.. (I think they have to
be Direct3D or even DirectDraw, I'm not sure.. ) Don't let the
Rendition junkies fool you, the 3dfx is the best 3d accelerator you
can buy currently. The RIVA128 is very good too, but not as "pretty"
as the 3dfx.. The RIVA cards are a 2d/ 3d combo, and one of the
fastest cards available for both, but like I said, not as "pretty: as
3dfx..

Yes,Either get a Rendition V2200 or Riva 128.The Rendition is faster than 3Dfx
and has more sim support as of now.The image quailty is also *much* better
than 3Dfx.The Riva is the fastest at Direct 3D,Which most games support now.

 areGP2,I-76, NFSSE, & ICR>>

The 3Dfx will only help you in I-76,Which Rendition supports also. But Rendition
will help you out in GP2 and NFSSE because of its lightning fast SVGA.ICR2 is
Rendition Ready as well,So you will get photo realistic graphics at 30fps.

If your strictly a Win95 gamer,Get a Riva 128(www.nvidea.com) or a Rendition
 V2200(www.rendition.com/v2200)

Have fun!

Do I need a 3D video card??

Hi there all,

I bought a reasonably high-end Gateway system at the beginning of the year; it's
a Pentium Pro 200 (talk about a waste of money!) with a 32Mb Ram, and a 4 Mb STB
Lightspeed Video card. At the time the salesman said it was one of the better
video cards out (my other choice was a Matrox Millenium).

I've been pretty happy with the performance so far, I get pretty good fr's from
CART PR, but the new TD4 demo is a bit jerky on full screen mode.

I'm thinking of selected upgrade soon, and I guess my main choices are more RAM,
or a special 3D video card. What I'd like to know is which would give me better
performance for games?

I've been reading most of the posts saying that special 3D cards improve the
graphics a lot - does this mean that the game actually appear different than
what I'd be seeing with my card or that it's just a lot faster?

Also if I do get a new video card, can I stick it with my old STB, or does that
have to come out. Btw how do I install it? Is it like installing a sound card?

Lastly any recommendations for the videocard? (The games I play most are GP2,
I-76, NFSSE, & ICR)

Tia for all advice
