Surprised to have trouble with NFS-PU

I picked up NFS-PU in the bargin bin a while back and just installed it last
night.
I was surprised to experience lockups. Never ran for more than a few
minutes.

I am running this on what is intended to be a games only PC, a just
assembled Celeron 800(OC 533a) , Abit BH6, 256mb PC100, Voodoo3 AGP, and SB
Live value. Fresh install of Win98 with SP1, DirectX 8a, and latest video
and audio drivers.

I could not locate any patches on the EA site for this game, is there one I
missed?

Is there a known conflict with any of my slightly dated hardware?

You can choose the multiplayer option and it will look for updates
before you login.  Just quit after the login screen comes up.

Update - just installed NASCAR Legends and EA F1 2000 on the same box.

NASCAR Legends runs fine.

EA F1 2000 also locks up or dumps me to the desktop.

I remember initially having some kind of trouble with it related to z
buffer depth, but that was on a Radeon.  Try setting your desktop to a
different color depth and see if that helps.  I'm not familiar with
Voodoo3 but I know older voodoos would try to run in their proprietary
22 bit color if you started it up from a 24 or 32 bit desktop.  NFS-PU
might not like 22 bit color.

The folks in alt.games.need-for-speed are pretty helpful with this stuff.

I have random lockups, mostly at the Alps circuit for some reason. All the
other tracks work fine.

O'ced to 866. Desktop is at 1024x768x32bit.

Another victim of AGP aperture?
