Best wheel/pedal set regardless of price?

by I.. » Sat, 07 Jun 1997 04:00:00

Well, I just went through my third spring on the pedals of the T2.
2 brake and one throttle. As I'm trying to wedge the new spring into
place AGAIN, the black gear that connects the brake pedal to the
pentiometer snaps off. That's it. I'm done. You'd think for $125+ you
wouldn't have to crack this thing open every 6 months.
Now, having had my fill of poorly manufactured, overpriced junk, I'm
ready to shell out the cash for a wheel/pedal combo that was meant to
be used more than once a month. The only real contender I've seen is
the $250.00 Procontrol Racing Wheel II.
Anyone have any ideas/experience with higher end wheels and could make
some suggestions/give some advice as to which is best? TIA

Best wheel/pedal set regardless of price?

Kev,

I own an E.C.C.I. wheel and pedals setup and absolutely love it. Granted,
mine is a year old and not the newer models that they currently make, but
it is well worth the price (I paid $550 w/shipping and handling). It is
built like a tank and has worked flawlessly for me. If price is no option
then you should consider it. Their web address is:

I don't mean to be critical here but can someone tell me what
the advantage of a $1200 or $550 wheel are over my $100 GP1 ?

My GP1 has performed well for me.  It took me awhile to get used
to but I can never return to a joystick now.  I saw someone
post that they spent $1200 on a wheel and I thought "Gosh,
my first car cost me that much money!"  Is your $550 wheel
smoother, more realistic feeling, come with a redheaded masseuse?

Joe,

I'm sure your GP1 does work great for you. Everyones mileage may vary. I
bought a more expensive wheel for durability more than anything else. I
have used a friends T2 before and yes it works fine and does the job, but I
wouldn't buy one myself. It feels to flimsy.

ECCI does offer a newer setup for about $1200. Would I pay that much? Nope,
but someone will.

BTW, I actually do have a redhaired girlfriend, but she didn't come with
the wheel.<G> That would be one helluva marketing concept though!

Have fun.

It does seem that the ECCI CDS2 is the choice.
Any other opinions??

I've looked at the TSW, the GP1 and the T1 & T2.  I purchased the T2
soley because of the price.  It was in my budget.  I've heard of many
people breaking the T2.  I can see how that would happen if you can't
keep yourself under control.  (like I can all the time!!!:))

I have found the T2 to be VERY comfertable and will never go back
to a joystick.  The only part I don't like is the shifter.

If you want a good entry level system with TERRIFIC support, buy
the T2. $72 after rebate.

I was just about to post saying everyone who broke their T2 was a
lead-footed troglodyte who just needed to learn how to take care of
their stuff, then I broke a gas-pedal spring. Gee it happens to the best
of us. ;>

Lannie -

I just bought a T2, and I'm pretty satisfied with it other than a problem
getting a couple of games to work the pedals after Thrustmaster changed
their circuitry to alleviate the need for the adapter (Screamer II, for
example).  Still working on that one.

But, what's this I hear about a rebate?  I paid $116 through www.cdw.com
(Computer Discount Warehouse).  I'd certainly like to take advantage of
this rebate.  Where do I get a coupon?

Thanks,
Rich

Amen. This was my post originally and that was my gripe. I don't think
I should have to tear the pedals apart every 6 months to replace a
spring I had to wait a week to get from Tmaster. I use the wheel quite
often and the pedals just aren't built well enough.

Hi Paul,

I used a CH VPPro for almost a year on Hawaii and I just got an ECCI
wheel and pedal combo. It's an extremely high quality wheel. I would
recommend it to anyone who's willing to pay for quality. I must admit
it's been a little difficult to get used to steering with 170-240 degrees
of wheel travel when you've been using about 40 deg max maybe<G>
Those tiny little movements that used to get my tail waggin with the
CH didn't seem to do anything when I first tried the ECCI. I had to
re-train my brain to make movements at more than a micro inch at
a time. The ECCI is adjustable so I could adjust it to be more like
the CH but I know it'll be much better in the long run after I get used
to it. After only a few races I must admit that I can still qualify as
good or better with the CH but due to the decreased sensitivity of
the ECCI I'm already racing much better in traffic (Except maybe
Wed Nite at Richmond... If Miral's reading this<G>).

Take a look at it at:
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/extreme/

I like realism as long as it doesn't adversely effect my lap times. In this
case, I'd much rather use the buttons which allow me to keep both hands
on the wheel while cornering. Same thing goes for my easy chair and air
conditining... can't race without em ;-)

Check out Sierra's site at www.sierra.com, they have an article posted
there on the best wheel/pedal combo, and they have one in the comparison
that I have never heard of before, it sells for about $700, and looked
great.  But that price!
