I picked up a LWFF last week.  This is my first experience with a force
feedback device, so I don't know if the noises it makes are simply to
be expected.  Even when driving in a non-ff sim, like CART Racing (the
reissue of ICR2), it makes a considerable amount of "creaking" noises.
Do they all do that?  Will it get quieter with some wear?  Should I
attempt to open it up and lubricate anything?

Take it back. I've used my LWFF daily for over a year with nary a squeek or
rattle.

The logi makes some noises.
1. screetching from the plastic bearings - can be cured by ball bearing
conversion.
2. scratching noises, which come from the motors carbon-brushes. Can only be
cured by changing the motor (have a look at Mauritz's ball bearing conversion
page)

Thankyou -- I'm studying that material now.  Can you, or anyone else
who's performed this conversion, tell me if they had the machining done
as shown in his drawings?  Or is there a way to put in the bearings
that I could do myself?  (I'm reasonable with tools, but real machining
is beyond me.)

Hmmm, I just bought a LWFF and found it very noisy as well. For $160 it
shouldn't have this problem. So it's either live with it, or destroy your
warranty by taking the thing apart?

For myself this is an indication of a product of poor quality , and of a
company that doesn't care enough to fix it. A bad sign.

Gonna pack it up and return it.

I did the conversion with some minor changes to Mauritz's page, unluckily not
documented.

Even if you can buy kit in future, there are some changes to be made inside the
wheel, which require a lathe. I haven't checked, whether the design could be
changed to a lathe free installation, considered a kit is available.
