Help !!!! NASCAR with WIN 95

I need to know how to load NASCAR in WIN95.
A friend is having problems and he want's me to help.
The problem is I have yet to use WIN95. I do not know what to expect
when I get started.
If someone would please send detailed instructions on how to load and
run NASCAR and/or INDYCAR II. I run Windows 3.11 (never 95) so please
make instructions WIN95 Idiot proof. If possible !
Any help on this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Getting NASCAR Racing to run under Windows 95

Navigate to your NASCAR directory, and right click on the NASCAR.EXE file.
You'll get a property sheet with six tabs at the top. Change to the program
page of the sheet.  From here, you can enter the any command line options
(such as the -h and/or -f option) in the Cmd line text box.  For example,
my command line reads:

C:\GAMES\NASCAR\NASCAR.EXE -h -f

Here's where it gets tricky:  there are two methods you can try:

Method 1:  (Try this first.  If it doesn't work, then try Method 2.)

Click the "advanced" button.  Go to the property sheet for NASCAR, choose
program, advanced, and just check the "Prevent MS-DOS-based programs from
detecting Windows" check box.   Next, go to the Misc. tab and make sure
the 'Allow Screensaver' box is UNchecked.

NOTE:  Method 1 is more likely to work if you have a 'healthy' machine that
is running all 32-bit VxDs (virtual device drivers) and few (if any) of the
old 16-bit 'real mode' drivers.  This method works great on my machine
(Pentium 90 with 16 megs and no real-mode drivers).  -Spyder

Method 2:

Click the "advanced" button.  Check the "MS-DOS mode" checkbox.  Choose to
"Specify a new MS-DOS configuration". Enter in a minimum config.sys and
autoexec.bat for playing NASCAR. Here is an example (may be different on
your machine):

  CONFIG.SYS
  ----------
  DOS=HIGH,UMB
  DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS

  AUTOEXEC.BAT
  ------------
  SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
  SET SOUND=C:\SB16
  SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 T6

In either case, click OK to accept the changes you made in the advanced
options
dialog.  Then, click OK again to accept the changes to the properties.

You will now notice that you've got a new ShortCut called "Nascar". Copy that
to
either your Windows\Start_Menu\Programs directory, or your Windows\Desktop
directory for easy access.

With Method 2, when you run that shortcut, Windows will ask you if it's OK to
shut down other apps.  If you answer yes, Windows will shut down, restart your
machine w/ the AutoExec and Config from above, and run NASCAR. When the game
ends, Windows will restart.  Not a perfect system, but it does work if Method
1 doesn't work for you.

The last option is to wait for the Win95 version of NASCAR to show up some
time
in 1996. <g>.

This is the way I run Nascar on my machine as well, but it only seems to
work if Nascar Racing is the first DOS program to run in a given session
of Win95.  I thought that I had seen this posted somewhere as a known
problem with the Nascar/Win95 combo.  Tt gets to the title screen and
then just locks up the computer, even Ctrl/Alt/Del does nothing.  I was
just curious if this ever happens to you or anyone else?

That's kind of strange.  For me that is the only time that Nascar is
guarenteed to work: i.e. when it IS the FIRST MS-Dos game to use the
soundcard.  I too have no 16-bit drivers (I don't even have a
Autoexec.bat or config.sys).  Often after playing DarkForces (or any
other DOS game for that matter), booting up Nascar will lock up the
system, other times it does not.

Go figure...

Below is a quote from Microsoft's advice on MS DOS games and Win95
taken from their Web site.  In my case I had to delete all the  old 16
bit SB AWE drivers from my config files and use only the Win95 drivers
before Nascar would run, but I do have exactly the problem they
describe - i.e. It will only run  with the sound turned on if it is
NOT the first DOS game to use the soundcard.  I don't know if anyone
has a fix for this?

Microsoft say that version 1.0 of Nascar requires DOS mode, so David
Long's friend should get the patch from Papyrus' Web site if his
version is not 1.21.  I don't know about Indycar II but Indycar I will
only run in DOS mode for me.

From Microsoft:

" NOTE: The 1.2 patch of NASCAR.EXE runs in Windows 95, with some
reservations:
- If this is the first MS-DOS-based program that uses the sound card
after the system is restarted, it hangs the system.
 - If this is the second MS-DOS-based program that uses the sound
card,  it works correctly.
- With this patch, the program works properly at any time if the sound
card is disabled in Device Manager. "

I have this problem whenever I run Pegasus Mail or Netscape prior to
running Nascar.  Another interesting problem I have is that when I
exit the first session of Nascar a second session begins.  In other
words, I have to exit Nascar twice to finally return to Win95.

My NASCAR runs every time.  I've never seen any problem like
you guys describe.  I shutdown Win95 to MSDOS run the game,
exit the game go into WIN95 again with no problems.  I can
create an icon in WIN95 and run it in MSDOS mode and it works
fine.  I can boot WIN95 striaght to DOS mode and it works
fine.

I'm talking about running it in full screen mode under Win95 without
exiting to DOS.

Do you have any stuttering video problems running this way.  Since you
are still running Win95 if you have any other Windows apps running
that would steal processing time from the simulator.

I found stuttering (I always have certain programs running in Windows)
so I create an Icon which loads DOS (without rebooting),. That gives
me my Win95 sound drivers and no stuttering video.  Running in full
screen mode may not work for everyone.

Is there anyway to use your sound card with out being in windows and
using their driver?  Hopefully so, or else Microsoft has really got us by
the balls this time.  Running in the Windows DOS prompt is _five_ times
slower (with just default apps going on) than the 'reboot to DOS' prompt.
If Microsoft is loading up new computers with sound cards that will only
run on Window 95 and no other options, we must revolt.  It's definitely an
attempt at world domination which wouldn't be that bad if their stuff
didn't operate so darn poorly.
