Upgrades needed for CPR to run

I don't think this qualifies as a newbie question since it deals with
out-of-date hardware and an out-of-date simulation; however, here it is.
My son has been interested in Indycar and CART racing for sometime due
to his uncle being a crew member in those series. I do not want to spend
a small fortune on computer hardware for a game, but I would like him to
be able to play something like CPR. We have a Pentium 100, upgraded with
the P200 MMX Overdrive, 24 MB memory, a fairly small and crowded
hard-drive, and a Thrustmaster steering wheel. Although ICR2 works fine
on this system, CPR with its nicer graphics is so slow as to be
unusable. I upgraded the video card to a Viper 330, which did nothing.
Now I have upgraded again to a Voodoo2. There has been a slight
improvement, but still the game is hardly usuable. Given that this game
came out some time ago, it is hard for me to believe that we need a PIII
500 with 128MB memory to run it. I am ready to try increasing the
memory, but I am tired of spending a $100 here and $100 there and still
having nothing to show for it. I would truly appreciate the advice of
the newsgroup for guiding me in upgrading our system to achieve this
objective, particularly recognizing that this program is not a burning
issue for the group.

Have a happy holiday, Larry

Upgrades needed for CPR to run

Very humble post Larry, Happy Holidays to ya!

If your only running 24 meg of RAM, and you've already upgraded to a V2,
then that's the place where you'll get the most bang for your buck.

I upgraded my PII 266 (not all that much better than your system by today's
standards) to a TNT 16 meg board (from a viper v330), and then added 128 meg
of RAM, and it did a world of difference!

If you can't afford to go that high, then at least go up to 64 megs of RAM.
Nowadays you should be able to do this for less than $50, maybe even half
that!

Besides you'll see a boost with other apps too, like Excel, Word, etc.
etc....

Cheers!

It's a while now, but I'm pretty sure that I only had a 200MMX and 32
megs of RAM when I bought this game and it played fine - a definite
sense of speed.  I would definitely double check what is running in the
background like Jay says here.  Do a CTRL-ALT-DEL and remove everything
except explorer and systray and then run it.

You need the Glide patch to utilize the Voodoo2 card.  Go to
http://cart.gamestats.com and go to the downloads section.  Download
triglide.zip and follow the directions.  Now when you start CPR you should
see "3dfx" as a 3D rendering option in the Graphics options.  Makes all the
difference in the world!
