Victory at Monza!

I did it! So what if it was a Novice race? It's my first win in GPL (aside
from whooping on my family).  I managed to get a rocket of a start - started
in 7th, Gurney on right, the two other Brabhams in front of me, the Honda to
the left of them, and (of course) the Lotuses on the front row.  I shot out
and split the Brabhams and managed to beat Gurney to the Curva Grande, and
snuck by Clark, then Hill in the Lesmos.  I managed to hold them off for the
rest of the race....what fun!  I also set my fastest lap-1:30.5x...

Hey Kirk!

Way to go! You've won your first GPL race. Ready for a new challenge? Head back
to Monza, novice race, dial up nine*** AI cars, and skip practice. That's
right, skip practice. You'll start the race in twentieth place. Now, go out and
win! This is no joke, Kirk. I've had the most fun doing this. Usually I finish
in the top five ( that is, if I don't crash!), but on occasion I win, and almost
always take the fastest lap. Once, I assumed the lead just before the S/F line
at the end of the second lap, then threw it all away at the Parabolica the next
time around. I'm driving the Lotus on default set-up, albeit with a lighter fuel
load, and turn laps about the same as you. Sometimes I get lucky and do mid or
high 29's, with the absolute best being 1:29.18. In order to win, you'll have to
throw caution to the wind, and take every chance. It's similar to doing hot laps
or qualifying laps, except with traffic! Try it out and let me know how you do.
A final word of caution: take special care if the Honda is starting directly in
front of you!

Regards,

Johnny Lugnuts

I was just going to suggest the same thing.  Skip practice and try to stay
alive.  And yes, watch those killer Hondas...they have a mission.  "Tora
tora, kill the Lotus boys."

Congratulations on your first win.  I know the feeling.  After a lot of
frustrations, it feels so good.

That is soo true, I hate that dumb AI John Surtees!  I only hope he didn't
drive like that in real life!

That first win feels sooo good doesn't it?  Hell, i just got my second win ever
(also in a novice race but those AI cars are exactly the same speed as me!) and
it's probably as good as the first!  I felt like spraying champagne when I
won....

"I felt like spraying champagne when I won...."

What I did was hit space bar after the finish line and pretend I was waving
at my millions of fans during my cool down lap...even if the dumb AI were
still racing full tilt...they were just jealous...

Yeah, nothing like seeing your name at the top of the newspaper! It's even
better when you put your own picture in there...

See  you on the track!

29's on the DEFAULT setup?!?  Whoa...
How much slower do you think the Eagle default is?  I *think* I've done a
1:32.xx.  It's been a while since I've run.  Steering wheel problems and the
discovery of Brood War took me away from GPL... :)
I was just curious if I was getting everything out of the stock Eagle that was
possible.

1:30.70 here with the default Eagle.

(man I've got to start learning how to setup these cars)

Wow...
You're two seconds faster than me - with the 'stock' Eagle(!)...  If you learn
setup skills, you'd KILL me.
My 1:32.47 is all I can manage.  Could you send me a replay of one of your fast
laps, please?  Maybe I can learn something. :)

1:30:09 here with the default Eagle set-up, and it wasn't a great lap
either? I reckon a sub 1:30 lap is easily possible with the default
set-up? (and has probably already been done by someone?)

Great, I have to make up more than 2 seconds?!?  I can't figure out WHERE.  I'm
*already* sliding through the turns even at MY slow speed... :(
