I am noticing with my single-axis setup that trailbraking is probably
one of the techniques you might want to practice little by little.
My best time at Monza in a Lotus was 1:30:25 until I did this quite
sliding lap (sliding into corners, braking very late) and got my first
time under 1:30 (1:29:89). It was great!
For some corners you can brake really really late; don't downshift too
fast, because the car is difficult to handle when really going fast
and shifting down to 3rd. Other than that, gear ratios seem to matter
quite much, and braking really to the limit. Using braking and
oversteer to take sharper corners is probably what you will need. I
too am faced with seemingly impossible times of 1:27:xx in Monza. But
even during my wiggly 1:29:89 lap I had to take over a car and that
even costed me time, so I know there's more into it than I did.

Practice often en every now & then look at a replay of other people;
look at racing lines, gear shifting and brake points. You will see
where you are missing out.

My problem is mostly oversteer.  I have to slow WAY down to stay on the dark
line, and I've noticed that I'm MUCH slower than the AI in the turns.  Brake
earlier, slower in the corner, slower at exit.  That's NOT a good
combination... :)

p.s. yes, you did shed a little light on the subject, thanks.  At least I have
a candle in the darkness now. :)  I'll probably have to re-read it a couple
times and turn another hundred or so laps...
