Confession and Questions about GPL

by nix » Thu, 29 Jun 2000 04:00:00

Ok, I confess.  I got the warez version of GPL ages ago and
never really played with it.  After watching this group for a while
now, I had the itch to try it again.  My questions are now:

1.  Before, I could run it fine with a V2.  Now, with the V3, It
wouldn't run at all except in software mode.  The GL driver wouldnt
work, and I (naturally) couldn't upgrade with the patch.  The D3D
driver works ok now (I can run it at 1600 alone).  Will I have that
problem if I buy it?  Can I get a full screen with those high
resolutions?

2.  Can I run it online with a cable modem?

3.  With GP3 coming out, and struggling to get faster with F12K, is it
even worth bothering with?  Should I use my precious little time I
have to try and master this beast?

4.  If I buy it, where should I start (point me to a web site)?

So you bought it or your still using your warez version?

I think we won't help you until you answered that ;)

And if so, what's the first word of the second page of the second GPL
manual? ;)

Only the books that come with it are worth the $15.

I forget the word alone somewhere in that sentence, but you probably
understood what I meant.

Hehe...changes the meaning entirely.  My jaw dropped after reading the first
post, only to see what you really meant.  :-)

Normally you can't patch a warez version to 1.2 but anyway you would have to
do this, i think a lot of problems are solved in the 1.2 version, to heck
the version you have look at the bottom, but in theory you sgould be able to
run a 3dfx version with V3

Yes it's hard to set but that should be okay, you have to get VROC to play
it online

Yes because F12K sucks and GPL is a very good training for ALL car sims, if
you are good in GPl you'll be good everywhere, it's like driving a real car,
brake late, turn in while braking....

Anywhere online if you are in the US you should be able to get it for about
15$, in the UK maybe for 12-15

Make sure you have the latest drivers for the V3 and that your system is
totally purged of any references etc. for V2.

If you're serious about driving and racing, GPL is the *only* sim available.
I read the reviews and previews of newer titles the same as everyone here.
And then I stand in the aisles in the local Best Buy, having just decided
that "Yes, it's worth a look", I put it back, wondering what it is I'm
hoping to find that I don't find in GPL. Am I looking for eye candy? Faster
lap times? More satisfaction from mastering an arcane skill? A more
"complete" experience? Or am I buying simply out of habit? What would it
mean to me if I were to find myself at the top of the F1-2k league some
evening? I'd feel cheated, definitely, because I know my standing on the GPL
heap doesn't warrant that.

At $20, the title is a phenomenal bargain. At a very conservative guess of
200, that works out to 10 per hour. Worth every penny, I would dare say.

Michael.

Those damn manual protections.  I bought F1GP at a software resale shop, I
open the box, no manual...oh well I'll figure it out.  Run the
game....mother f----er!!!!  I like cracks now! ;-)

If Carmageddon defined something meaningful to you, of course, yes. It
doesn't to me, not that this should diminish your enjoyment of your standing
there. I draw the comparison because I don't expect F12k challenge your
driving skills as much as GPL does. I could be wrong of course; I have yet
to see even a playable demo. The question I pose is: do you expect F12k to
match your GPL experience?

Michael.

Why not?  If you're at the top, you're at the top.  It wouldn't matter if it
was in GPL, F12K, or Carmageddon...
