GP2: TM GP1 steering prob! Help Please!!!

by jack toma » Mon, 16 Feb 1998 04:00:00

If anyone can help with the following problem I'm having, it would be
very much appreciated.

One day, for no apparent reason, my GP1 paddle response (accelerating
and braking) is uneven and very jerky. (ie. a little throttle produces
full throttle response and then very low throttle and then full again,
without physically changing the level of paddle response).

I've tried re-calibrating several times (both in game and at windows
level) to no avail.

A little background on my system:

P166
DirectX v4
Microsoft's 'Gameport joystick' drivers installed  (same prob with TMs
ACM Game Card drivers)
GP2 v1.0b

Any help appreciated. Many thanks.

Jack.

Jack,  I , too, use the TM GP1 with GP2. I've only experienced this problem
when I first installed the sim, before I had the controller options set. Is it
possible your throttle and brake sensitivity sliders have been moved? I have
them set up around 90% for the throttle and 80% for the brakes. Does the wheel
work in any other games or sims?

Sounds as if the pots for the paddles may be getting a little dirty.
First take a look at the gears at the base of the paddles and make sure
that the pot is turning smoothly.  If so, try cleaning the pot by
spraying some "tuner/switch cleaner/lubricant" into the opening of the
pot and then work the paddle to work the cleaner over the contacts.  You
should just be able to find openings in the pot for both paddles when
you have the paddles fully depressed.  For the mechanical-uninclined,
the pot is the "silvery" cylinder at the base of the gear.

I seem to be having a very similar problem.

Do you mean the "silvery" cylinder and not the "screw like" thing? The
gears are attached to the "screw like" thing, the "screw like" thing
attached to the "silvery" thing? Just spray a "tuner/switch
cleaner/lubricant"  into the square little hole?

Does anyone know if TM will send new pots if that's the problem?

Thanks in advance guys and gals

Yes sir.  My GP1 just plain wore out & in December TM sent me out a
whole steering wheel assy-no charge.  Just had to send my old wheel back
w/their paperwork. Can't complain.

Hope this helps

Yes the "silvery" thing-a-ma-jig-doo-hickey.  The square hole seems to
be about the only opening available (unless you disassemble the back
plate).

If cleaning doesn't help, TM will send you new pots.  They seem to be
rather behind in responding though.  Due to the number of units sold of
late, their Tech Support seems to be swamped.
