GPL: Buggy internet play?!

Is it me, or do other people get thrown from internet sessions frequently?
I will be racing, and then I get a full screen of static, and I am thrown
back to the multiplayer connection screen.  This happens probably once or
twice every 10 minutes or so.  It has not happened, as of yet, during a
race.

Anyone have this problem?

Anyone have a solution?

It happens to me a lot.

I sure hope so!  Let us know if you find one.

Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not. Remember this is the Internet.

Have you tried to optimize your connection for game play...disable error
correction, etc?

Hasn't happened to me yet in the many hours of online racing I've already
put in in GPL, but I am on an ADSL connection, maybe if you guys are
on modems, it could be one of the settings in your core.ini file, check
out the info on Alison's site.

Actually, I had something similar happen.  In a regular race/practice (not
multiplayer) the program would randomly shut down and kick me back to windows.
After a reboot, it would do the same thing.  I ended up deleting the program,
the demo(different subdirectory), and re-installed the full game.  Works fine
now.
I just need a faster machine, dammit... :)

Hi Kevin,

Your best best is to find a FAST server.

I was connected to Tim McArther's server for 9 hours
and was booted out twice (but so was everyone else).

My latency was 0.111 (111ms) with a cable modem.
You should be trying for 250ms or less.  Check your
latency three times in a row to see if it's fluxuating a
lot (over 250ms).  If it is, that's bad; however, if it's
fluxuating below or around 250ms thats OK.

To find your latency (after attaching to a server):
1. Close the chat window
2. Press ALT-L
3. Open the chat window to see your latency.

To find your latency before connecting to a server just open
a DOS BOX and type in PING <the ip address>
(Multiply the 'time' value by 2 to get the latency).

Example PING 24.1.24.139 to see if Tim is up :)

Jason.

I think the problem is two fold. For one, while GPL will allow up to
20 in a net race it seems more than 10 or so is pushing it - and
that's even if they're all LPBs with ADSL/Cable or better connects.

Secondly: If you are on dialup you are especially sensitive to the
number of others in a race. Remember that your computer has to receive
info telling all about the place and status of all other racers.
That's a lot of data.

Try finding a server with only 4 or 5 others and see if you still get
the boot. If not, work your way up from there.
