ICR2: Screamin' 3D is Slow

by Doug Reichl » Wed, 11 Jun 1997 04:00:00

I just recently purchased a Screamin' 3D card with the Rendition ICR2.
When I installed it everything went well.  It looks ok and the FR is good.
Ok, the FR is excellent!  ;)

However, when I am NOT driving, the thing seems slow.  For example, when
changing the distance of a Race from 20% to 100%.  With my old card (STB
LightSpeed 128) the thing FLEW.  I would be at 100% in no time.  With the
3D card, it takes a lot longer to get there.

Even just changing anything in the garage seems jerky.  Scrolling in menus
is much slower, etc.  It's just overly slow to me.  Or at least slower
than it had been.

Any suggestions?  Is this "normal"?

It's on a P-166 and like I said, the LS-128 was wickedly quick.  If I try
another game that is 2D, then it plays ok so I'm guessing that I got the
3D installed correctly.  Maybe I missed something.  ???

BTW - I lost 2 frames per second according to CBENCH (SVGABNCH).  The
LightSpeed 128 was at 38.5fps and the Screamin' 3D is at 36.2fps.  Is that
a clue or is the Screamin' not "the bomb" in 2D?

The game is only fast while playing...While you're in any of the
"menu-modes", the thing slows to a snail's pace.  This part of
the game wasn't optimised, and I'll wager a guess that the
programmers may not have felt it necessary.

Its not the bomb.  Your old car was probably optimized for 2d; the
Sierra isn't.

Try to run DOOM on it.  <g>  My P166 with the Sierra card nets about 15
fps.  Duke runs great in SVGA modes.
