GP2: won't detect SB16 & game hangs

by Lassi T Tapo » Wed, 11 Sep 1996 04:00:00

Just got a brand new P133 and couldn't wait to be Mika Hakkinen but
whaddya know... the game won't work!

The install runs just fine, but when I try to install the sound card
with autodetect, I get a 'Can't detect sound card' and the game won't
let me manually select the card, it just states that 'Your card is not
SB compatible'.

If I select the No sound-option and try to play, the game hangs just
before entering the***pit screen after a few hard disk reads
with 'please wait' and the track profile on the screen.
The funny thing is that if I do the minimuminstall the game won't
hang (but still no SB16).

I didn't have any problems installing NHL96 and the SB16 autodetect
worked just fine in NHL96.

I've tried all kinds of boot settings + bootdisks and am pretty sure it
is not a memory issue. The SB diagnose programs isn't reporting any DMA
or IRQ problems and otherwise the SB works well.

My hardware is:
Intel Endeavour P133, 16MB
SB16 ASP PnP ISA
Aztech 6x IDE CDROM connected to the motherboard as master in secondary
IDE-connector.

TIA

Similar problem originally with my ESS1688 (emulates an SBPro)
I had my DMA at 0 which worked with most games.
The ESS is EEPROM configurable so I just set the DMA to
1 in my autoexec and GP2 worked fine.  NFS was similar.
I guess GP2 can't pick up a sound card on DMA0.

Don't know about the SB16, you might need to set jumpers.
Also, check that your SET BLASTER statement is correct,
some games use this to look for your card, and if any
entries are wrong, the game will get completely lost.

To answer my own question (if anybody is having a similar problem):
I went into the BIOS setup and disabled COM2, power saving and set
the 'peripheral detection' or something from the default to Plug and
Play (even though I don't have WIN95) and set the PnP operating system
to none. Don't know which one was causing the problems, but after that
the setup worked fine! I then turned every setting back to the way it
was one by one and tried the SB setup and there was no problem... weird.

One mail I received suggested that I should setup the soundcard in
somebody else's machine with manual settings set the way they are in my
own computer and then copy the file SOUND.CFG from the sound directory
to my own game's sound directory. This might have also worked...
