Do you have any cd-rom drivers in autoexec.bat and config.sys?
If so,try removing them and see what happens.
I wrote to mitsumi for solutions to this same problem recently,as
my CDrom drive had had increasing difficulty in recognizing
discs during the last year,at least in my subjective experience.
They suggested removing the dos drivers in the two files above,
and it seems to have had a certain effect.Since then it seems that I have
been experiencing a marked decrease in disc recognition
problems (Which is very much to my surprise,as I had thought previously,
that removing them would only have an effect on performance,not physical
function)
