Rally Trophy --Favourite Car?

by David Er » Mon, 18 Mar 2002 21:21:43

Now that I've got RT running to my satisfaction I've had some time to play
with the different cars. Haven't unlocked the last 3 cars yet (yeah I know
about case of beer but I'm doing it the hard way) but I'm definitly leaning
towards the Lancia Fulvia as a favourite. It has a decent amount of
horsepower, the 5 speed makes gearing properly easier, seems to have a low
center of gravity and the car balances in the corners better than the
others. Corners that I used to crash out in regulary when hustling the Mini
through are a snap in the Fulvia. Anyone got any other favourites?

of "KALJAKOPPA" is the one cheat i know.

The Fulvia FTC is an amazing car. I'd also pick the Alpine as a good car,
because it's easy to drive and flies! But, I find the game is the most fun
in the Stratos FTC. At the same time, that car manages to***me off the
most too..

Hm.  I'm guessing the 3 cars you haven't unlocked are the Ford Escort,
Renault Alpine, and Lancia Stratos?

I haven't had a lot of time to play rally trophy lately, but my
favorite cars by country are:

1. Russia - Lancia Fulvia
2. Kenya - undecided
3. Finland - Renault Alpine
4. Sweden - undecided
5. Switzerland - Opel Kadett

At the stage you're at, I'd stick with the Lancia Fulvia until
everything is unlocked.  Over the course of a full 5 country
championship, I really feel that is the car to beat.  It's easy to be
consistent with and has more horsepower than any other front wheeled
car.  The Lancia Stratos is faster but over a full season I can't
imagine not making a huge mistake somewhere (hell, I have a hard
enough time getting through single stages with it in some rallies) and
it's not so much faster that it's worth it imho.  I like the Opel in
Switzerland tho...it's weight kills the top speed in the long Swiss
straights but at the same time it helps with traction on the fast
bends, with the loose gravel (you can really put the power down,
moreso than in any other rear-wheel drive car).  As the manual
describes it, the Renault Alpine is an absolute joy on tarmac stages.
So far the Finnish stages in the Renault are the one place in the game
where I can really drive fearlessly.  It's a shame it doesn't generate
enough grip on the gravel stages.

It's really amazing how different each car handles.  I can't imagine
how any driver could compete on a gravel stage in the Fiat 600 Abarth,
for instance, with the light weight and awkward torque curve spinning
the wheels all over the place.  I think if you can master all the cars
in the game on all of the stages then you've really accomplished
something on par with the Monsters of GPL ranking.

I like the Alfa Romeo FTC -- nice car to drive overall.  The Lancia
Fulvia is VERY sweet, but I decided to make it more of a challenge by
choosing a more quirky car.  The Alfa can be challenging, yet
rewarding as well.

The Ford Lotus Cortina FTC is my favorite.  There's an excellent article
about it here http://www.pixelmatic.com.au/cortina/lotus.html from 'Road and
Track' 1964

I know what you mean by the challenge and the reward combination. At the
moment useing the Fulvia to be able to concentrate on smoothly running the
course as opposed to dodgeing a sucession of disasters is reward enough.
Should I ever get to the point of easily winning I'll go for more of a
challenge in rally cars :)

LOL!  FWIW, I just finished my first successful (i.e., event-free) run
at Russia 1 with the Stratos FTC -- I think I must be improving,
somewhat!  I also broke my own personal best there in the Stratos on
only my second run!
