Strange review for OF1R

by Bobby Al » Thu, 03 Jun 1999 04:00:00

The review is at http://www.racesimcentral.net/

Here is an extract which I found really really strange.

"...The other big complaint is in the handling in races. This game just
seems way too sensitive for my tastes, even with the computer assists on.
Official F1 Racing really requires players to use the brake pedal to make
some turns. This makes me want to retract my previous statement that the
developers at Lankhor were watching real world races -- for if they were,
they would know that most drivers don't use the brake, they downshift to
slow up. Yes, it might wear out the transmission but these are professional
racers, not your average 20- somethng-year-old on his way home from work, so
burning out the transmission isn't likely since there is a whole team to
keep the gears in top notch order..."

Deep insight or total bollocks? Please comment. :-)

Witness the birth of another "Who are these idiots reviewing sim-racing
titles?" thread.  Can't say a man who think F1 drivers don't brake isn't
deserving of a thorough bashing though. ::)

"What colour is the sky in your world?" becomes "what colour do brake
disks glow when the car is slowed down using the transmission?". I
must have imagined those glowing disks. Was it carbon fibre clutch
plates that were being fitted then?

I'd hate to try and adjust the brake balance on one of those cars, far
less try to slow down without locking the rear solid...!

Cheers!

No kidding -- even the resident IRL zealot knows that F1 drivers use
brakes! <G>

Strange review for OF1R

by Douglas Elliso » Fri, 04 Jun 1999 04:00:00

I sent the prat an e-mail about the WHOLE damned thing...it's down below
here...it makes worthy reading.  I hope he never writes again.

"...Your review of Official F1 racing was truely appauling.

One comment in particular was bought up in rec.autos.simulators.

I came to see what was meant, and found the whole review to be full of
mistakes, errors, and lazy journalism. About as amateur as it can get.

I'll start at the beginning.

"In the race the player is primary locked in a chase view, at least in the
previewable copy that I was playing"....

In the demo version you can use the End, Home, Pg Up, Pg Down, Ins, and Del
keys to move through a LOT of views in a race.

"While the***pit view seems to be missing, that seems to be only a small
complaint in a game that still has a few other minor issues"

There are infact, three different***pit views, eachone putting you
slightly lower, and eachone making the nose & front wheel take up more of
the view. They are very good. However, the mirrors don't work, and you must
resort to using the big piece of cack at the top of the screen.

"What is missing is the replay mode..."

I enjoyed watchin many replays in the demo-version. Very nice it was to.
What were you doing instead.

"This game just seems way too sensitive for my tastes, even with the
computer assists on"

Played GPL have you. Clearly not. Formula One IS sensitive. That's the whole
point. Is the cars were slower to move they'd be CRAP.  I was using a $50
steering wheel, and found the demo easy to drive, and became quite at-one
with the car as time went on. You must get used to a control feel for some
time, before actually slagging it off. A sign of complete incompetance on
your belhalf.

"they would know that most drivers don't use the brake, they downshift to
slow up. "

BULLSHIT, BULLSHIT, BULLSHIT. You keep refering to the writers of the game
watching too much racing as opposed to writing about it, but YOU, infact,
have clearly watched no Formula One at ALL. The brakes are used EVERY LAP of
EVERY CIRCUIT.  Take the demo-track...Suzuka. a REAL formula One driver uses
the brakes going into turns..1 & 2, the second Degner Curver, the Hairpin,
Spoon Curve, and the *** Chicane.  At Hockenheim, for instance, how is a
driver to go from 340+ kph to less than 120kph THREE TIMES A LAP without
using his brakes. And if the drivers didn't use their brakes, WHIY DO THEY
BOTHER TO MAKE THEM, and why are some tracks considered harder on brakes
than others.  This point alone makes you clearly a highly incompetant
critique for racing games / simulators.

"and no one who wants to be playing with automatic transmission should even
think of sitting behind any F1 game but here it almost makes sense."

Automatic transmition is a must for the beginning driver. Before fully
utilizing the controls of the car, one must get used to driving it. And at
first, I did this in Offical F1, but I later changed to manual, and enjoyed
it also. So again, complete CRAP.

I don't think Official F1 lives up to the hype it was given. I'd  consider
it a good game, if it was available on a budget price, but not full price.

If your review of 6.1.99  was worth writing at all, it was worth writing to
discover an e-journalist who's efforts were simply not worth imposing on the
general public. I wouldn't be supprised if you recieved HUNDREDS of email
from people who both like the game and don't, reminding you that your review
was CRAP. What's the point of writin a review so long before the real game,
or the demo comes out. Even the cheapest Computer Magazines remaind reserved
about commenting, and at least they know SOMETHING about what they are
talking.

That's all I have to say..and I hope you either think before writing, or
don't write again.

I went to the site to have a laugh, and it looks like someone's email
to the reviewer worked. He has re-worded the article to the text
below! :-)

"The other big complaint is in the handling in races. This game just
seemsway too sensitive for my tastes, even with the computer assists
on. Downshifting, which in the real world would be used in addition to
braking to  help slow the car, really doesn't seem to help enough in
this game. The brakes seem overly sensitive and it takes an extremely
balanced and skilled driver to make the turns while braking,
downshifting and properly in turn   acceleration to just stay even
with the other cars. The computer controlled cars handle turns far
better, so it is likely that races can be lost in the turns because of
this."
