I didn't get a chance to test the rain mode, but I was in Pure Sim mode in
the dry. Backing out mid corner should send you spinning like a top. Maybe
it's my steering wheel setup, as I got some reaction using keys and
joystick, but not enough IMO. I've driven a race prepared Porsche Carrera,
and while they can be surprisingly pushy when you stay within the adhesion
limit of the rear socks, you can't take the liberties with them you can in
the game. And did I drive fast enough?? -I won, so I guess it was fast
enough... ;-))

Now, of course, I have no reference on the cars in GPL, but SCGT is way off
IMO. Much too docile... the cars don't bite back. Shame.

Please note that I'm especially harsh on SCGT as it was hyped up to be a sim
(again, more by the press than by the developers themselves), when in fact
it sits firmly in the halfway category.

Well my 911 expirences are probly less then your, but lifting in the middle
of a corner in an old torsenbar 911 would make the car oversteer badly.
Luckily I was not on the street or a race track just a Autocross course, so
it was hamless.  The 911 felt pretty good to me in the game.  The Saleen
seems to turn in and go thru mid corner very close to my current
Autocrosser.

Viper Racing is so fake. The thing oversteers way too much and the burn outs
are impossible to control, and what the hell is thay stupid wheely feature?

Well tracks are fake but I find the driving feel very good.
The wheelie thing is a very good joke.

Sure, in the rain.  Not on a dry road.  I ran the Porsche all the way
through the GTQ through GT2 and not once did I ever have to worry about the
rear end*** out on me suddenly, a 911 classic.  Only time I bothered to
change a setup was at a rain race at Road Atlanta, other than that it was
all default.

Um, sorta...for a halfway point between an arcade racer and a simulation.
Lets put it this way: it does not model tire temps, so its not much of a
simulation by today's standards if it doesnt.

And exactly why would I want to do that?  I want the car to behave exactly
as it would real life, or close enough as possible, w/o having to create
bogus setups just to enduce behaviour close to the real car?

Just because you can ;-)  I'm all for realism, but maybe you have to help SCGT
become more realistic.

If you go into the garage you'll find the suspension is tuned to produce an
understeering car.  The first thing I do is soften the front and stiffen the
rear to get good grip when turning.  One other important thing to check out is
the Garage / Other tab.  There is a weight bias slider and I think (I'm not a
home right now) that you cannot get a 68% bias toward the rear -- maybe only
55%.  That could be the reason why it's easier to handle than real life.

According to the developer/publisher it "IS" realistic and therefore you
shouldnt have to help it.  And you definetly should not have to help it
through bogus setups.

Never noticed that now that I think of it.  But that makes the game even
less real.

I don't think it's scary.

"Au contraire", I think it is beneficial for us, Papyrus and all the other
companies also.  We have been criticizing the new racing software much more
because GPL has really biased us.  On the good side, of course.  So if a
company wants to impress us, they have to create something at least close to
GPL.  We accept that the physics might be a little less complex than the new
Papyrus game engine, since we understand that it's very hard especially for
companies who create their first title in the racing market.

This got me thinking....in real life, how do they monitor tire temps.  I
mean, is their a temperature sensor in the tire itself?  Can they only take
a surface temperature of the tire once it has returned to the pits and is it
just a matter of holding some kind of thermometer against the tread?

Not necessarily, you need to have a minumum weight after all. If you manage
to underbid that by quite a margin (while retaining structural integrity, of
course), you can "top up" and place extra weight where you think you need
it.

I'll admit I maybe didn't spend long enough on the game (had it on loan from
a friend), but what I experienced didn't exactly entice me to explore
further. I thought the career option, for example, was poorly implemented.
Buy a car and win some easy races. Buy another car and win some more races,
.... need I go on ?

I think the only way to push developers and publisher into making good
games, is not to buy the average ones. And for me, SCGT is decidedly
average.

I've seen the technicans at F1 races put contact probes on tires and
measure the temp in 4 or 5 locations across the tread. I don't know if
they have any telemetry on tire temps while they're on the track.  But
it wouldn't be hard to hook up a infra red temperature sensor (no
contact required)on the car to read the tempurature in real time. I use
a similar device to measure tool tempuratures at injection molders. I'm
not sure where you would put the sensor to get a good reading on the
front tires though.  Maybe facing rearward on the front wings.

I've read in several places (I even think one of'em was '4-wheel drift'
supplied with GPL) that in modern cars they monitor tire temps continuously.
I've been wondering how they pull it off as well though. My best guess so far
is the same as another poster in this thread, remote IR sensing. Anyone with a
bit of technical insight into this?

Yup, AFAIK, that's how it's done. I remember years ago Win Percy had a monstrous
accident at Le Mans (on Les Hunadieres) with his Jaguar XJR-9 Sportscar because of
a tire blowout. Apparently, one "gum" of used *** had clogged up the sensor, so
they didn't see the temp going up, and had no chance to warn him.
At least I seem to remember that being the case :)

Are you joking with this? It is a troll??? I have SCGT and like it
quite a bit. It is fun.

But the best car *SIMULATOR EVER* is GPL with FF enabled.
SCGT's FF sucks by comparison, but the game is quite a bit of
fun...

Sorry.

You mean it's NOT F1RS or MGPRS ????

WOW, what's this world coming to :-)
