  • Whether a dedicated joystick game card is needed 1996-08-20 · 43 posts
A buyer asked whether a dedicated game card was needed with a fast Pentium and a Sound Blaster. Many users reported no problems with sound card ports. Creative Labs' Mike Carrothers and Buzz Hoffman, who appeared to speak for ThrustMaster's ACM card, argued in detail about Windows 95 Plug and Play conflicts, port addresses and CPU overhead. ThrustMaster's Matt asked how to use alternative ports.
  • GPL steering linearity and Ackermann geometry 1998-04-12 · 58 posts
Charles Mak praised GPL's physics but asked for GP2-style speed-sensitive steering. A long discussion followed on linear versus non-linear steering settings with different wheels, why steering feels heavier at speed, and Ackermann geometry, explained by Jim Sokoloff, Matthew Knutsen and Doug Milliken. A side quarrel involved Bart Brown and an anonymous critic.
  • Survey: NASCAR 2 controllers fail under Windows 95 OSR2 1997-02-22 · 25 posts
A user surveyed the group about NASCAR Racing 2 refusing to calibrate any game-port controller when launched from Windows 95. Many reports pointed to the OEM Service Release 2 (Win95 'B') build, though Eric Busch and others had it working, so a second factor was suspected; DirectX 3, FAT32 and Sidewinder drivers were all tested without a clear fix. Papyrus's Jim Sokoloff and Charlie Heath acknowledged the reports and said they were trying to work out the cause.
  • Does CPU speed affect car speed in NASCAR 2? 1997-09-13 · 30 posts
A NASCAR 1 player moving to N2 asked about quieter engine sound and whether CPU speed affects car speed. He found that a speech slider above 50% reduces other sounds. Jim Sokoloff explained that joystick sampling is interrupt-driven and that physics runs at a fixed rate on all machines, so only frame rate affects the driver; he also discussed calibration ranges, and attributed one user's big speed gain after a CPU upgrade to recalibrating.
  • Gameport wheel spikes in rFactor traced to sound noise 2005-09-06 · 21 posts
Remco Moedt's gameport Hyperstim wheel produced spiking inputs in rFactor but not in Papyrus titles. After testing he concluded that noise from his sound hardware was corrupting the gameport readings, which Papyrus's own controller code had masked. Suggestions included a Rockfire USB adapter and better grounding.
  • Searching for a PCI game card for analog wheels 2003-05-31 · 31 posts
Goy Larsen, an overclocker, sought a PCI game-port card because he felt his analog wheel's response changed with bus speed. Others suggested USB adapters such as the Rockfire, a motherboard with a locked PCI clock, or going digital; the only dedicated cards found (Act-Labs PDPI and Thrustmaster) were ISA and discontinued. Paul Laidlaw explained that polling an analog game port can cost noticeable CPU time.
