MSFFW in GPL with XP

by Jerry Cummi » Wed, 16 Jan 2002 10:32:35

I recently bought the MSFFW wheel, just plugged into an XP usb port,
and used.  Worked great.  Then a  few days later, I realized I did not
install any software.  Did so using the cd that came with it, and now
GPL won't recognize the steering.  It does see several of the buttons.
The wheel works fine in some other games.

I've  tried every setting I can find.  I've posted this earlier, on a
different forum, and someone replied they took all the settings off,
rebooted and it worked.  I'm at wits end with this.   I've patch GPL
for the cpufix, I'm at version 1.2.0.2.  Some of the other issues with
GPL and XP I avoided by patching before using.

I hope someone can give me some ideas to try.

I had this same problem. For me the cause was that the msffw did not like to
be plugged into the usb hub.  I plugged it into the usb port on the computer
and now it works great. See if this works for you if you are doing the
samething. Also try to uninstall and reinstall it if you have to.

Are you running more than one controller?  If so, make sure to follow the
instructions in the manual to out the MSFFW on Controller ID 1.  If not,
make sure it is connected to the first USB slot, not on a hub.  Otherwise, I
would uninstall the controller software, and go back to letting Windows XP
handle it.

Hi,

Have you installed the Sidewinder 4.02 software ?
Only with this software you get split axes. Maybe it solves you problem.
You can ignore the warning at the start of the installation process.

Cheers,

No steering problems here with GPL, XP and MSFFW.

Are you sure you have the right controller type selected in GPL?  You have
to use the DirectX driver.

Yeah, can you believe that MS gave the SideWinder XP and HWQL certification
WITH that installation warning in place?

Kind of makes me lose faith in their certification process.  Hey, when you
own the baseball...

Wow that is strange. Other than the usb hub problem my MSFFW works great in
windows xp. I have no problems at all.

Mine works fine too, even in a hub.

Yes, in fact I've tried all the schemes, even custom ones.
Deinstalled the controller more than once. Tried it without the
controller,  Nothing, nada, steering is not recognized.   I guess  the
next I'll try is to uninstall GPL, and reinstall with the controller
already in place.  Don't have time to do that just now....maybe
someone will come upon another idea before I get to that point.   I
realy really would like to get this to work.  Any possible core.ini
settings that might force a change?

Ensure that you have at least DirectX 7.0A installed on your computer.
I couldn't calibrate my MS nonFF wheel properly until I installed the
latest version of DirectX (version 8 is available on the MS web site).

Hope this helps

XP comes with DirectX version 8.1.  I've done a fair amount of
reasearch on this problem, and it appears others have had this
problem, but fixed it by tinkering with the controller settings.  I'm
coming up with a big zero answer to the problem.  I'm going to retest
everything under the MSFFW controller, systematicly checking each
setting.    I've done this already, but  did it  randomly and may have
missed something.  Short of that  reload  the game?  Does anyone think
by reloading GPL with the controller already there that it will make a
difference?

Off of another forum, a person recommended deleteing the control.cfg
file from the players directory.  I did so and got this very close to
working.  In fact everything works except the steering.  By deleting
that file, it forced upon entering GPL the controller calibration.
It's so close, as if just one more little tweak would get it.

After that I uninstalled the controller completely and tried to make
it work, since it did work that way at the very first.  I could not
get it to work well at all.

Reinstralled the controller and was able to get it back every time to
everything working except the steering.  On the calibration you can
tell it's trying to calibrate, but once that feeble attempt is done,
the steering goes to unassigned.

So so close.   I'll give it a few more days, and if nobody can give me
an idea, I'll remove GPL and reinstall with the controller there.

I'm really stumped as to why you are having problems.  We must not be
getting a piece of the puzzle here...

I've been using the MSFFW since early beta's of XP, and have yet to have a
problem.

I'm beginning to wonder if maybe there isn't something funky with the USB
port(s) on your computer?
